Told a friend I would find these things for him, so, has anyone seen Amaranth around?Where in central east Toronto would I find it (Leslirville to be exact) Also he is looking for sour cabbage for an old family recipe. Any ideas?

Wanted to correct a possibly wrong impression! These items don't have to be found in my area, just letting you know where I am located. I will travel somewhat.

i'd give the bulk barn near leslie a shout to check for amaranth. i know i've seen it and in my memory it was in a bulk type store but i don't imagine the ones i normally visit in kensington to have them. slm might also be a good option.

i'm not really sure what you mean by sour cabbage either...

Would this be like brined cabbage for cabbage rolls? If so, the only place I've seen them is Food basics at Shops on Steeles, Steees/404

Amaranth grains should be available at any of the usual health food stores.

Sour cabbage? There are a few related preparations that go by that name, German Saurkraut, Slovakian Kapusta and so on, it would help to know what this recipe is to narrow it down,

Thanks for your responses. I will check on the sour cabbage. I'm pretty sure it's for his family recipe for cabbage rolls, but I will check to be sure.

Just spoke to my friend. The cabbage is indeed for cabbage rolls. The leaves come vacuum packed in liquid, and it is pretty much a whole head of cabbage. My friend is fron Saskatchewan and apparently this is quite readily available out there!

That is exactly what they had at Metro (Gould and Church) right next to the fresh cabbage in the produce section!

            Hey Leslieville,

Not in your preferred area but I've purchased amaranth at Fiesta Farms before (kind of hidden on the top shelf) and I've seen sour cabbage by St. Jacobs at the Metro by Ryerson.

            Hope that helps!

In addition to Fiesta Farms, Karma Co-Op has amaranth in bulk.
