London - Fung Shing is Closed

This was our go-to place in Chinatown since it opened in 1977. Walked passed yesterday and saw a notice announcing their permanent closure after the owner retired in Jan 2011. Thanks for > 3 decades of good food, Fung Shing.

  1. Just to say, you're not the only one who's sad to see Fung Shing go!

It was a constant haunt for me when I first arrived in London 20 years ago and, even as I became more ambitious (read: pretentious) as a foodie, sampling the regional delights of Hunan and Bar Shu etc. etc., I'd still find myself returning every few months or so to I place I knew well, where they knew me, and you could get the stawlart dishes I was first introduced to when "going for a Chinese" was an exotic adventure, cooked pleasingly.

    Mini-sob.

Hey, glad to know that there's a fellow FS fan out there, Gareth. Yes, Fung Shing hailed from a time when Chinatown chow were rustic Toishanese comfort food like braised pork with yams in claypot, and greasy chow mein. When I saw the closed sign on its front door, it felt like a small part inside me had died :-(

In a way, I'm glad that the other Chinatown stalwart & old family favorite, New Mayflower at Shaftesbury Ave is going strong though - my family had always liked its strangely named fried milk (more like curds dipped in tempura-like batter & deep-fried till golden brown on the outside) and the best lobster noodles in the world!

Another famous albeit defunct Chinatown icon was Lee Ho Fook - remember Warren Zevon's 1978 rock song "Werewolves of London", whose lyrics went:

"I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook's
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
      Werewolves of London"

Lee Ho Fook closed down a few years back - its Gerrard St site is currently occupied by Dumplings' Legend.
