where shall we have a late, sit down, lunch in the Oakland/Berkeley area?

I am relatively new to the area, living in Downtown Oakland. Friends are coming up from LA and have an early evening, return flight. We want to have a delish, filling late lunch. Really, anything but Mex or Chinese. We want to sit and enjoy, have cocktails or wine............... All recs. are welcome. BTW, we are using public transport (I have a 2-seater which doesn't work for 3!)

  1. Take a look at Flora, Bocanova...maybe Luka's.

    1. First of all, I suppose you might want to define "late" . . .

Flora (1900 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) is open for lunch from 11:30-2:30, Tues.-Fri.

Brown Sugar Kitchen (2534 Mandela PArkway, Oakland) is open until 3:00 Tues.-Sat.

Boconova (55 Webster ST., near Jack London Square) is open 7 days a week, from lunch through late night.

Chez Panisse Cafe - Not a terribly long walk north of Berkeley BART
        Café Lunch Hours:
        Monday through Thursday: 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
        Friday and Saturday: 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

      2. Wood Tavern, delicious, filling, full bar and good wine, and near the Rockridge BART.

Ditto on the recs for Chez Panisse Cafe and Wood Tavern. Consistently excellent and fun. If cocktails are essential, Wood Tavern gets the nod over the wine only offerings (no bar) at Chez Panisse.

Great places; not in downtown Oakland, as per the OP's request. Then again, neither are restaurants in Lack London Square or on Mandela Parkway . . . ;^)

            1. re: zin1953

The original post didn't specify downtown Oakland.

              1. re: Robert Lauriston

Robert, you are correct. That said, without getting too far into a semantic debate, public transportation in California generally is not very easy, nor very good. In fact, it sucks! Certainly this is true when compared to the public transport available in places like New York and Chicago.

Since the OP lives in downtown Oakland, and since she is relying on public transport, why make things more difficult for her?

                1. re: zin1953

The original post specifically mentioned public transit. Going a few stops on BART is no big deal and significantly expands the late-lunch-with-wine-or-cocktails options.

                  1. re: Robert Lauriston

true, true - we are very good walkers and love to exert a little energy on the way to mangia! BART just hasa to be w/in a few+ blocks of the destination.

                2. re: Robert Lauriston

Hey guys, the title of the post says Oakland/Berkeley area, so one can assume that the OP is not limited to downtown Oakland, in fact, not even just the city of Oakland, and would welcome ideas from the broader area.

          2. Bocanova, Cesar, Oliveto Cafe, Wood Tavern. Unfortunately most of the places that are open all afternoon are not near BART.

Chez Panisse Cafe closes between lunch and dinner.

There's a new-ish FREE shuttle bus in downtown Oakland that loops Broadway, Jack London Square and Lake Merritt. Only runs from 7 - 7 p.m. I haven't tried it but it's free.

            2. Are your friends flying out of Oakland or SFO?
