I am looking for the best tempura in Austin. And the nominees are...

I have a soft spot for the shrimp tempura bowl at Banzai. It's always on special and makes for a nice, reasonably light (for tempura) meal. While it's not the best tempura in Austin, it may be the best for the price.

Uchiko - sweet potato kakiage, eggplant, and onion rings have all been excellent.

you looking for shrimp, veggie, or a combo?
i tend to prefer veggie because of the range of flavors and textures.

I had wonderful tempura at Ryu of Japan a couple of weeks ago. I especially liked the variety of vegetables. This past weekend I had tempura at Origami in Round Rock and was disappointed. Hardly any veggies.

Mikado is good but I find the hole in the wall down south called D K Sushi Restaurant to be superb.

This is owned by the same D.K Lee that runs his north Lamar sushi only location and market. VERY high reviews on Yelp! and I have tried them both. I am now a regular. If I want sushi, I go north to Lamar. If I want other food including tempura, I go south to 1st street.

The outside is terrible to look at as it is in a small strip center. Don't be fooled. Go on Monday nights for D.K's famous karaoke and tempura! you won't be disappointed.

I've enjoyed what I've tried at Mikado.
