Asafoetida/Hing in YYC?

I've searched the prairie board, but no notes on where to buy powdered hing in Calgary - I'm new to the city but I've explored a couple little grocers and no luck so far.

Anyone know of a good Indian spice market/grocer that stocks hing?

Thanks!

  1. Ok, I admit I don't know what Hing is, but! There is a new Middle Eastern/East Indian market that opened up where Office Depot used to be on Barlow that is south of 32nd Avenue. It's around the Sunridge area where you'll see the new Four Points Sheraton hotel and it's north of 16 Avenue but south of 32nd Avenue right off Barlow Trail, if you're coming off 16th Avenue and heading north towards 32nd Avenue it would be on the right hand side where you will see a Tim Hortons and McDonalds side by side (it's located right behind them in the same block).

Sorry! I don't know what it's called, I only passed by it once and thought it was interesting but I didn't have time to go in.

    Good luck in your search!

    1. Silk Road (in Ramsay) lists it on their website.

Was there yesterday and they do have asafoetida.

Great store btw. First time there and it will without question be my go to for dried herbs and spices. Now, if only I could say the same about fresh which are hit and miss everywhere, and usually expensive.

      2. got mine at the cookbook co at the cfm.they have a store downtown as well

        1. Thanks for all the advice!! I'm going to check out all those places, I love exploring new groceries!!

Check out Valta Bison, also in the area. Lots of Bison , naturally, but also they are trying to stock up with local stuff, like Sylvan Lake Cheese and more.

Wedbesday is a good day to go since thats when the fresh bison arrives. Always lots of frozen, but Wednesday, fresh.

They are putting all their eggs into this retail outlet and will not be at any of the Farmer's (right!) markets.

Thanks, Scary Bill! I'm vegan, but I passed on the info to my bf who is definitely a carnivore, and he is making a trip on Wednesday to check out the bison. I forsee a few bison on the grill soon, especially since it's been nice out :)

Theres a few Indian grocery stores in the strip behind the Safeway in Falconridge. We picked up some hing a while ago at the grocery store in this strip. I can't remember the name, but it was a few doors down from a restaurant called Nirvana (5075 Falconridge Blvd. NE). I believe there are at least a couple of other indian grocers (as well as clothing and jewellers) in the same strip. Also a couple of indian meatsops there which may not be of much interest to you, but your BF may want to check them out. (great marinated chicken wings at Mann Bros. )
