Going to Ojai next weekend (March 18-19). I would appreciate suggestions for dinner other than Suzanne's and The Ranch House. Thanks.

There is/was a very unique place in Ojai, the unusual name of it escapes me at the moment (it's been quite a few years since I've been there). It was in a private home. They had 1 or 2 seatings per night and there was a 6 month wait for reservations. There was no actual menu; you ate whatever they fixed for that day. I remember toward the end of the meal they let the family dog wander through the dining area.
Does anyone else remember this place?

      Finally remembered the name; "Coolibah".

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"

Stayed at the Blue Iguana which was great. First night we ate at Azu, and we were very pleased with the food, service and ambience. The next night we ate at Suzanne's, and it was great as well. Greeted by Suzanne, beautiful table next to the patio window, good wine by the glass, excellent meal. Solid food at both places. I get a little crazy over all this linear thinking, i.e., rating on a linear scale from 1-5, which is "The Best", etc. All these experiences are different and one isn't necessarily "better" than another. We will have good memories about both experiences and would return to each without hesitation. We are experienced and educated diners as well as cooks, and there is much more to eating out during a trip then trying to find the Ojai equivalent of Spago.

Amen. If I wanted to eat at Spago, I would do that (haven't in 20 years). Based on your original post, I checked out the menu at Azu and Suzanne's and put both of them on my list. I figure I also have to try Maravilla because we are staying at the Inn. We are going in April. I will post my thoughts when we return. Thanks for replying.

We had dinner at Azu last week and it was delicous. Mediterranean influenced meals and a good range of tapas. We had their chile relleno, crawfish, and lamb kabab tapas along with a delicious creamy tomato soup. Place was pretty busy so I'd make a reservation for dinner. Also open for lunch.

Prices were fairly reasonable for Ojai too.

Food at Azu was pretty good. It does seem all the food in Ojai was just average. However the service at Azu was horrible. Our waiter was very rude for no reason. I got the impression from a lot of the locals in Ojai that they don't really like tourists that much. Weird.

Had no problems with service at all when I went and, no, I'm not a local.

We had terrific service as well. Very enthusiastic and professional young lady.

I ate at Azu recently, and found the food fine and the service no problem at all. (Not a local.) Perhaps you got the wrong waiter on the wrong night.

You could take a look at Maravilla http://www.ojairesort.com/casual_dini... in the Ojai Valley Inn for fine dining. We have heard good things about it from friends who go up to Ojai a lot for wine buying.

Ojai Valley Inn is good, not great. In my experience it's the best Ojai has to offer.

I was just at the Inn last weekend. We stayed for two nights, and ate at Suzanne's the first night and at Maravilla the second. Maravilla was better, but neither was spectacular. And neither was cheap at all. The consensus seems to be that Ojai is simply not an amazing restaurant destination. But the farmer's market Sunday a.m. behind the adobe building was really great. Nice selection of fruit, vegetables, baked goods, meat and seafood. Worth a trip to stock up for the ride home.
