Urban Livestock [split from LA]

You'd be surprised but a lot of immigrant families have farm animals. If you go east on Vernon off the 110 freeway. You can literally see chickens running around some homes when they break out. The Hare Krishnas have farms, and they would not kill their cows. There is another related sect on Rose in Venice. Rose Temple--the devotees there, at least when I went, had milk from their cows and paneer cheese. I already agree to disagree if you do--but I find it pointless to treat chickens ethically and then eat their eggs. To me that's the same as many here who want their animals treated ethically before they eat them. Again, I agree to disagree, just putting my view out there since the opposing view is already here in the majority.

  1. Animals like cows and chicken are meat, if we didn't eat them and their eggs/milk there wouldn't be any large quantities of them. They'd just be funny looking animals in zoos.

    And because we raise them for food and depend on them that means we owe them some respect. Just because they're going to be killed and eaten doesn't make it okay to treat them unethically.

    I buy all my eggs & milk from rawsome, great place.

      jadekarrde, people in some countries eat rat and dog--so they could be meat too. There is also such thing as bushmeat--primarily animals we have in our zoo. In the last couple of months, I watched a documentary on anthropophagy on National Geographic. My argument is not that you shouldn't treat them unethically but that killing and eating them sort of trumps all that--ie you shouldn't kill and eat them. Well, I am not really saying that you shouldn't do that, but my view is that. I personally regard milk and eggs as very different things. As far as saying that because I eat you that is the only reason you exist--the large quantities of them--that reminds me of my parents saying they can kill me because they brought me into this world haha . . .

    2. East of 110 on Vernon is basically south L.A. Pretty sure there aren't cows in yards there. Nor in Venice. The chickens running around that neighborhood and many others are pets, not necessarily raised for eggs.

      What do people think about Niman Ranch? I've been impressed with what I've heard of their practices. OP was not clear about whether these items would need to be *from* L.A. proper, which is next to impossible.

        There is exactly one farm supplying the Niman Ranch in California. While Iowa pork is excellent, it isn't remotely "local" to anywhere in California. The abattoir is in the Bay Area, too, so anything raised in Utah or Iowa or Texas has to be transported there.

        I like the taste of some of their meats, but if you're looking for local and sustainable, Niman Ranch isn't it.

        Also, the chickens running around the yards are generally raised for eggs and end up in the stew pot when they're too old to lay, turning into tinga de pollo. That's not to say there are no pet chickens in South L.A., but that's not the norm.

          I was going to say what Das Ubergeek said. I had some family members who had their grandparents come from the old country and slay the "pet" chicken for dinner. We were little kids, and I am glad I was, and am, vegetarian--my cousin, a little girl, who had been raising it, in her view as a pet, had to eat it for dinner.

          Anyway as far as cows, cant talk...eating, you can treat your cow as ethically as you want and have fresh milk every day like Joseph Petri from Los Angeles, CA.
