BLOOD ORANGES...still around??

pearlD Mar 11, 2011 08:38 AM

I'll be back in Toronto quite soon and am wondering if there are any 'Blood Oranges' still around..every year it seems either I return later (late March) or they finish earlier, in any case I've really been missing them and wonder if anyone has seen them lately in the 'city'?

Actually there is a really easy way to tell a blood orange from the other varieties (naval, clementine, etc.) - but you have to buy one first. Seems a bit obvious perhaps but the "blood" in the name refers to a "red" flesh inside - the actual juice is red as well (orange/red). Good luck with the hunt!! Soooo tasty!

Fortino's has them on sale this week. Heavy for size, juicy, only 1 or 2 seeds, although a bit hard to peel with a lot of pith left on the orange. Worth it though!

Just bought some at Sobey's $1.49/lb. Also, stripped and golden beets $1.99/lb.

Thanks for the lower price advice, 02putt! I'm actually not fond of the veggies you also mentioned, but the oranges price sure can't be "beet"!! :-D
