smileys...

could we get some automated smileys for the posts...?
or would that not be chowish?

There's a different forum I sometimes visit that is so cluttered with bouncing, winking and wine-glass- clinking happy faces that it's really hard to look at for very long.

If you must have them, here are instructions for doing it yourself

I personally find them annoying ... anywhere.

To the extent that feedback from other 'hounds is sought, I offer mine. Fundamentally, I do not like emoticons and therefore do not use them. I've managed twenty years of online participation and e-mail usage without them and have no interest in starting now. If I understand the "automatic smiley" function correctly and it is a way to turn your semicolon-parenthesis into a blinking, yellow face, although I don't understand why it should be done, I have great no problem with the "trick." My fear, however, is that the gimmick becomes almost mandated to express humor, which will likely reduce the level of the discourse on this site. It is, in many ways, that level of discourse that separates this community from many others.

i dont think it will take away from the discourse...
and i dont mean a huge panel of them...just the basics...
i just have gotten used to the auto ones...even phones do them nowadays...
it was just a little harder to go backwards from them after using them ..
(i havent been on chow as long as some of the other boards/forums i am on..)
and i have been using the net since before the net was the net...
think 9600 dial up bbs with ascii graphics on monochrome monitors..
