Second Hummus World - great, authentic Israeli falafel with all the toppings. Try the mango hot sauce.

Another fan of Hummus World. It's glatt kosher, too. Owner/operators are Israeli. And their chicken soup will clear your sinuses and cure your cold simultaneously. Falafel, shawarma, hummus, soup, small place, mostly for takeout, about four tables, plus a few outside in nice weather.

Taiim Felafel Shack in Hastings is very good...

            Also Layla's in Stamford.

try Hummus World in Roslyn on Lincoln Avenue; just down the block from Roslyn High School

The pickins are slim but there is a place called Ta'im (I am probably spelling it wrong) in Hastings and Open Table in Eastchester. I have only tried Open Table and it is ok. Probably not the most amazing in the world, but it is a lot better than those dry bland falafels you describe. There's an Indian Snack place in Hartsdale that supposedly does falafel, but I can't vouch for it. Name of the place is Masala Kraft.

Although now I realize you are talking about Long Island....OOPS.
