On the casual side, I'm not saying it's the best ever, but Sichuan Pavillion does some pretty good chinese, and its affordable. Both of these things are rare in the district limits. I second the Tabard Inn and Equinox recs also.

Personally I think Sichuan Pavillion is the best Chinese in DC proper...it's my go to spot for Chinese these days.

I work across the street so I've been pretty much everywhere. Siroc is lovely for lunch or dinner, Breadline for lunch, Heritage India, Kellari...

Giovanni's Trattu is great if you are in the mood for Italian.

There are a number of good restaurants in that area. My recommendations would be Casa Nonna for Italian, Tabard Inn for a cozy environment with American cuisine, and Equinox for a higher end meal with excellent cooking.
