Puerto Vallerta--how is it?
The wife wants to go here for her b-day. Any reports?

If she enjoys Mexican food I doubt you will be disappointed. Its a chain type restaurant, but at least its a small, local chain. The food may not be that memorable, but it is reasonably good. I've been to the Middletown location a few times, and though its not someplace that is high on my list, I would definitely go again. Very good chips and salsa. My favorite Mexican place is Monte Alban in Hartford, but its probably not the right ambiance for a birthday. Kind of a hole in the wall type place.

+1 on EVERYTHING you said--about both PV and Monte Alban. Oh, and if you like spicy salsa, ask for the spicy mushroom salsa next time you're at PV. It is CRAZY hot!!! Think there are habaneros in it. I also like their albondigas soup very much.
Stormshadow, not sure where you are, but I'd say for a birthday dinner of Mexican food, try Besito in West Hartford Center. You'll find other reviews of it on this board.

re: kattyeyes
Thanks for the +1 Katty! How about these Spanish oriented thoughts for a birthday:
Costa del Sol, Hartford - very nice atmosphere, great food, great service.
O Porto, Hartford - pretty much ditto
Agave Grille - young crowd (like I care), and you can stroll down to Black Eyed Sallies for some good music after dinner.
Azucar, Hartford - On a Saturday night, if you close your eyes, you would think you are in Puerto Rico. Food, meh, music, unbelievable!-----

re: jkuhlen
Well, the wife definitely wanted to go here, so we went. We were a bit disappointed. The food was only mildly seasoned for the American palate. The carnitas that I got tasted like yankee pot roast--in fact I would rather have had pot roast. My wife got the Arroz con pollo (labeled on their menu as their specialty) which tasted like sausage and peppers, but with chicken.
Service was so-so; the waiter didn't even ask us if we wanted any more drinks.
We'll stick with our go-to mexican place.

re: jkuhlen
Hi, jkuhlen:
Have only been to Agave (from your list), but do remember liking it. I'd still vote for Besito for a Mexican b'day dinner and Monte Alban for Mexican any other time. I've never tried the other Spanish-oriented spots you mentioned--probably more fish dishes than this kat likes--but I did notice some standalone meat dishes that look pretty tempting. Any non-fish faves for you at del Sol or O'Porto?-
re: kattyeyes
I've never been to Besito's, but I checked out their menu and it looks great! Can't wait to try it!
I'm afraid my usual preference at both CDS and O'Porto is the Mariscada (squid, shrimp, clams, mussels, etc. in salsa verde), so I don't have a lot of experience with the non-fish options. I mean to try other things, but I always seem to end up with the Mariscada.-----

re: masha bousha
I've tried the one in Middletown, CT a few times, I would rather eat at McDonald's, seriously. It seems like I will go with a group and have something 'safe' and I always feel like I wasted my money. There are so many good restaurants in this town now, I wouldn't even bother. Too bad it's so close to the movie theater.
