Bill Baker - UK Wine Giant - RIP
I just learned of the death of Bill Baker (2008), one of the people who most influenced my love of wine. Bill bought and sold old cellars as Reid Wines, peddling amazing treasures like Latour Chassange Montrachet Les Demoiselles 1973, 19th century maderias, 1929 d'Yquem, 1945 Lafite, La Tache, Petrus. . . and sharing what he had and knew. Every wine lover should have a friend like Bill Baker, as bigoted and gluttonous as he was. I am so sorry I never got to say goodbye or thank him for those magical glasses he poured freely, for me and my former husband, young wine novices in the 1980's.
Bill's obituary from Decanter is wine trade history and lore. Great tribute from Jancis R.
The Telegraph Obit mentions the Bill Baker - Robert Parker feud.
