Moderne Barn or North in Armonk?

I made reservations at both of these restaurants for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, but I don't know enough about either place to know which one I should keep. Has anyone been there for RW? Moderne is for Sunday brunch/lunch, and North is for dinner on Saturday.

Thanks!

I can't get a babysitter for the two days - we have a toddler and a newborn, and my MIL said she could do either day, but not both.

The HVRW website says that north is not participating in Rest Week on Saturday nights...They are participating Tuesday-Thursday as they are closed Sun/MOn. I have reservations on Thursday night at north.

Weird - I swear it didn't say that when I booked it last week. Guess that simplifies my dilemma then...Moderne it is.

          1. re: confitlover

Confitlover, the RW website says the only exclusion at North is Saturday nights. Have you heard otherwise? I have a res for next Friday so I hope the info on HVRW is accurate. I think I'll drop them an email to confirm as I'd be pretty annoyed to drive all the way up there and not have the RW menu available.

            1. re: i_eat_a_lot_of_ice_cream

only saturday nights...they are closed for saturday lunch. I asked if they were participating on friday night and they said yes!

                Great, thanks!

      2. I think you'd have to decide what kind of dining experience you are in the mood for. Moderne Barn is quite large, with a very large menu. North is far more intimate and a much smaller menu b/c they are farm-to-table. I don't think they are really on the level at all, but that's just my opinion.

@MRS---I think you mean on the SAME level. They are on the level, at least North is. I've very much enjoyed my food there.

          1. re: Axel Heyst

Oops!!!!! Major typing error!!! I meant "not on the same level" as I think North is definitely much better. damn auto correct!!

        2. I have been to both on several occasions. North is excellent and consistent. If you want to see and be seen, ask to sit downstairs. If you want a more pleasant dining experience and don't care who you see or who sees you, sit upstairs and have a nice relaxing meal without all the hubbub. I actually like that you have a choice, as sometimes I want one and other times I want the other. The food is always very good. Desserts serve three easily. I don't drink any more but the wine list is good, well-priced and varied.

Moderne Barn is hit or miss. I've had some very good meals there and some not so good. Service can be spotty and it's always kind of crowded and can be noisy. If you choose well, though, you can have a very good meal. Both it and North are great additions to the area and deserve support, in my opinion, as they are clearly trying hard and mostly succeeding.

One of the reasons I haven't been to North yet is the lack of a menu (or anything, really) on their website. Especially if I'm going to drive that far out of my way (I'm in Ossining) I want to know what I'm in for, in terms of menu offerings and price... and even basics such as days/hours of opening. I find it peculiar that a restaurant with such big names behind it wouldn't have a more detailed website.

            1. re: i_eat_a_lot_of_ice_cream

Yeah this whole "we're going to have a website but not answer such meaningless questions as what kind of food do we serve and for how much" can be irksome. I guess they think that menus are for Denny's.

              1. re: i_eat_a_lot_of_ice_cream

I made a HVRW reservation for North before seeing the menu. Now that it's out, I'm glad that I did. I actually expected that I'd have a problem finding dishes that did not have pork, based on what I had read previously. But there is lots of stuff I can eat on the menu. It's first on my list for HVRW, next Tuesday.

I also made a reservation before seeing the menu for RW because at least I knew what the price would be in this case, which is more than I can say for a regular night, given the absence of even a sample menu on their website. I understand that restaurants that use local, fresh ingredients often have menus that change often, but a sample (regular, non-RW) menu with sample prices wouldn't be too much to ask for on their website.

                  1. re: MisterBill2

They are very accomodating and if there is an ingredient that you don't want they will prepare it without.

                    1. re: debmom

I wonder if that is true during Restaurant Week? In any event, the menu is great for me. Salmon Crudo -- yum! I personally think that North's RW menu is much more interesting than Moderne Barn's, but that's just me.

                      1. re: MisterBill2

I think the food is much better at North than MB

                        1. re: debmom

I agree with debmom, I think North is far more superior than Barn -- isn't barn owned by the City Limits people?

Yes, although I think they'd prefer that you think of them as owning their Manhattan restaurants like Oceana.

BTW, North's HVRW menu has been updated with their desserts. They sound excellent. I am looking forward to my meal there next week.

We ate at North last night and it was AMAZING. I would definitely go back for full price, and I do not say that about many places I eat at for RW. We were given the choice of upstairs or downstairs, picked upstairs and I was glad that we did since it was ridiculously loud downstairs by the time we left. I got to speak to co-owner Stephen Mancini, told him about comments here about lack of an online menu (and minimal website). He said they are looking into getting a better website but the problem with just posting s menu is that it changes often. I suggested that they could post a picture of the menu on their Facebook page, he seemed to like that idea. I actually got a regular menu (they printed it for me) and can try to scan and post it here.

My wife had the beet salad, root vegetable lasagna and chocolate bread pudding. I had the salmon crudo, striped bass and skillet cookie. My only complaint is that the salmon crudo portion was rather small, although it was very tasty. I was going to try to get back there for lunch during RW, but I just checked and they have nothing before 1:45 any days so I don't think that will be happening.

Oh, and they give you a packaged cranberry muffin with the check. Looking forward to having it for breakfast in the morning! Nice touch!

Great review. We're going later this week and I'm really excited now! I'm glad you got to mention the website issues to them. If you get a chance to scan it, I would love to see the regular menu.

So, how did you enjoy it? BTW, I am attaching the menu they gave me. I had to scan it in two pieces and reattach because it was bigger than my scanner. It's bigger than it ended up here.. not sure if there is a way to fix that.

Thanks so much. We really enjoyed the food. I'll post a long review on the RW thread in a bit.
