This should help you . good luck

    1. I think the best TW is from the Hot Grill in Clifton. It's worth the drive if you really crave one.

2nd place goes to Johnny & Hanges in Fair Lawn and Wayne. Also worth the drive.

Both great places. I also like Libby's in Paterson and the Getty Grill in Clifton. My favorite Texas Weiner joint is Pappy's Diner in Totowa. Excellent tangy chili sauce.

Manny's in Union is good for a grilled Texas weiner. There are really 2 types. The "Hot" or Paterson area Texas Weiner that deep fries the frank and uses a thin chili sauce. Then there's the "Plainfield area" Texas Weiner that grills the frank and has a thicker chili. The Plainfield area joints (Texas Weiner l, ll, Red Tower, J&G, Middlesex Texas Weiner, etc.) all use a Grote & Weigel griddle frank. The Paterson area hot Texas Weiners mostly use the special Thumann's frank for deep frying. The Hot Grill uses a Sabrett beef/pork frank.

John-- do these places actually split the dog and grill it, or do they deep fry it? I always thought Hot Grill and J & H deep fry...

          1. re: menton1

The Hot Grill and J&H deep fry their dogs as does Libby's, Goffle Grill, Pappy's and all of the places in the Paterson/Clifton area. The Plainfield area places grill, but do not split their dogs.

I love Libby's. Great to visit the falls (especially now) and then walk over for lunch!

        2. Libby's and Pappy's are wonderful, but The Hot Dog Caboose in Midland Park has great Sabrett dogs in a very unique location.....right next to the train tracks. The ladies who run it are very pleasant.

How are the dogs prepared at Hot Dog Caboose?

They are grilled, not deep-fried at The Hot Dog Caboose. I had a cheese dog.....lots of mild cheese topped the dog. My boyfriend devoured two chili dogs (choice of mild or spicy chili). The hot dog buns were very fresh. The place is also very clean......unlike a typical "roach coach" that you may encounter peddling dogs. There is a big, round picnic table if you choose to eat on site. Did I mention that the ladies serving were helpful and friendly? There was also a steady line of folks wanting hot dogs or their delicious chilis, and I can say that they have "regulars". We sat with a couple at the picnic table who said that they like the Cabooses over Johnny and Hanges dogs.

Sounds similar to the grilled dogs at the Karl Ehmer cart in Hillsdale...and that's good news, I prefer grilled dogs, as long as it's not on a roller grill...

I am also a fan of Riverview East in Elmwood Park, and not a bad dog at all at Goffle Grill in Hawthorne.
