A Chinese restaurant for my 80-year-old mother-in-law?

We'll be in NYC this weekend, and my mother-in-law has v. fond memories of the "Shanghai Restaurant" (or "Cafe"? I've seen it referred to both ways, even on this board's archives) that used to be on 125th and B'way. My job: to find a comparable current restaurant.

So, basically, a Chinese restaurant for dinner in Manhattan that does the basics really well. The Platonic Chinese restaurant. From what I understand, the old Shanghai did do Shanghainese cuisine, so that would be a plus. But, basically, it's her first trip to NYC in a long time, and I'd like her to have as enjoyable a meal as possible. The restaurant needn't be white linen-sedate, but something more than divey.

Thanks in advance.

  1. I've heard great things about the Shanghai menu at Tang Pavilion. I have not been there yet, but it looks like a nice restaurant. Here are some recommendations from another thread

    Tang Pavilion
    65 W 55th St, New York, NY 10019

    1. shanghai pavillion on 3rd ave between 78 and 79th will fit the bill perfectly

Thanks for these suggestions. I've now read some of the recommended dishes in archived posts. Any other favorites from respondents or others?
