Ice Cream in Sydney

I'm looking for really good ice cream in Sydney (not gelato). While there are plenty of brands available for take home, and a lot of chain places, I haven't noticed any gourmet scoop shops.

I'd particularly like to find a place that did good sundaes.

What are your thoughts Chowhounds?

Head over to Cafe Ish - their wattleseed ice cream is ridiculously good, especially with their Wattle Maccacino...mmm

Also, try Nice Cream (if it's still around) - it's served in a lot of the top restaurants. They don't have a retail shop but you can buy them from Glenmore Rd. in Paddington.

The other one I like is Passion Flower.

A lot of exotic Asian fruit and flavours. They have outlets all over the place near Chinatown and Town Hall.

If you overcome your aversion to Gelato, try Pompei on Bondi Beach (the pizza is great too) and old stalwart Bar Italia in Leichardt.

There's a place near the end of Dixon Street (non-ChinaTown end) that does enormous sundaes. Never been there though.

The place at the end of Dixon St is French Riviera - see above

thanks mikey, i do want to check out passionflower so this has encouraged me to get onto it.

and yes, pompei is delicious.. it's just gelato doesn't always scratch that ice cream itch!

I found really, really good ice-cream not in Sydney, but Auckland (NZ) - Kapiti, best in the world!

But my fave Sydney spot has to be the French Riviera which used to be in Double Bay, but has now moved to the city:
