Domingo Gigante - Sunday Morning brunch in Temescal

  • 2

Domingo Gigante has been taking over Dona Tomas every Sunday morning 10 - 2 since early Feb.

I've heard good reviews over the last few weeks and finally had a chance to check it out this morning.

I'm all about savory breakfasts and that is what Domingo Gigante offers. I had:

"Odin Meyergami Brunch- Persian tomato stew with daal, pureed garlic and eggplant, topped with a poached organic egg and fried hash brown potatoes. Served with a cucumber, tomato, and feta salad and Persian flat bread (barbari)" $8

which was excellent but could have used a bit more potatoes or flat bread to add a bit more texture. I ended up rectifying the situation by tossing in a few of the stone ground corn chips that come gratis.

We also had:

"Breakfast Rellenos- Poblano Chilis stuffed with potato, chorizo and caramelized onions, steamed, topped with jack cheese and an organic fried egg, served on a bed of pureed seasoned Peruvian beans" $8

which was also very good but again lacked any contrast in texture. The pureed beans were the standout of the meal for me - slightly tart and smoky and very satisfying.

The humus and salsa that come with chips were both homemade and fresh if not mind blowing.

They offer coffee and juices (no alcohol) and service is pay up front (cash only) and seat and serve yourself coffee/water/utensils.

The entire meal with coffee and juice and extra sides of humus and beans came to $27.50 - a real bargain.

There is a DJ, or DJs, who played a tasteful mix of 60's pop (Left Banke, Neil Young) light punk and other stuff I didn't recognize.

It's definitely a hipster scene, but I saw some families too. I guess they were probably hipster families.

The menu changes weekly and they post it in advance on facebook. I can see myself going back often.
