Four Worlds Bakery is a great option in West Philly (also available around town)
I am a European who has been on a decade long hunt for decent, local bread in Missouri, Virginia, DC, and now Philly. Recently, I saw a story on West Philly Local (westphillylocal.com) that there was a new bakery in the area. I had a chance to try it out Saturday and I am so impressed. Four Worlds Bakery on 4634 Woodland Ave has great breads, bagels, fresh croissants (crispy, not those chilled, mushy ones most "bakery restaurants" carry), traditional danish, and some cup cakes. The spelt babka and rugelach was tempting, but I figured that the sample of multigrain bread, challa, and almond croissants that I got was enough for starters. Our next stop was sandwich toppings and I have been eating sandwhiches all weekend, it is such a relief to know I can get great bread in the neighborhood, instead of that mushy, gluey stuff that most grocery stores sell. We will definitely be back, and their stuff is supposedly available at other sites around town too. http://www.fourworldsbakery.com

The Challahman makes great things. But one important distinction about his bakery versus almost all others is that he has many baked goods that are made with Wild Yeast. True Sourdough (Levain) bread. That is quite hard to find. The fact that he makes these things with organic ingredients is all that much better.
Fantastic Bakery.

oh my goodness aren't the crossaints lovely? The babka is also really terrific but I don't get it much because you need to purchase a large hunk that I immediately finish and then regret. ;)
And lenejohansen, Four worlds does deliver to other sites, but more preferable in my eyes is that you can special order and pick up from a few locations on certain days, so that you'll get exactly what you want when you are expecting it !
