Mario Batali Cherry Tomato Sauce (Jarred)

I picked up a couple of jars at Costco Richmond last week. I opened a jar this morning just to test it out.....DANG! it's good! really good! It's made with cherry tomatoes and San Marzano's - no preservatives, prepared in a "green" facilityl. I think it was about $4 a jar for 24 oz - that's how much I pay for a can of San Marzano's alone!

It was so good my daughter was scooping it into her mouth, cold, for breakfast. I finally had to take it away from her so I would have enough for supper. If you couldn't tell by my name, I'm Italian and have been eating Nonna's sauce (and my own homemade) for years. This might even be better than Nonna's....I just sent my husband out to buy 4 more jars. Heck, it might even be better than my own....!

Has anyone else out there tried it? Thoughts?

  1. I've tried it and I agree it's GOOD, especially for a jarred sauce! I like to use it as is on top of pasta and topped with some fresh herbs. It's perfect for making a quick and easy gourmet meal. I don' t know whether it'd be a regular item at Costco in Vancouver but it was available here in Calgary in limited quantities briefly over the past two months. After they sold out, that was it. I knew that was going to happen so I stocked up as there was an asterisk on the sign at Costco which means it's a discontinued item. I hope Costco will bring it back in the future as I'm sure I will be sad when my stash is used up.

    1. I loaded up on a bunch when I saw it a month or so ago @ Costco downtown. It wasn't on stock on my last trip (last week). It's quite good but I much prefer the Victoria White Linen marinara sauce that Costco had once several years ago. I'm forever checking for it. Costco sometimes has the White Linen tomato-basil, which is good but very strong on the basil so not as versatile.

miss.foodie - thanks for the asterisk tip!

      1. I just got back from Costco Richmond where they still had sauce. 10 jars later......I"m good to go.

        1. I also noticed it over xmas. it's excellent, far superior to most bottled sauces. It's on sale now at Costco $6.00 for 2 bottles (still lots in Richmond). Not a bad deal at all.

          1. I looked for it in the burnaby/coquitlam costco but they didn't have any.....if anyone sees it at the downtown location again please post as I am looking forward to trying it-thanks!

Unless it's gone on sale in the past two days, I paid $8.49 for two jars at Costco Richmond on March 7th. Still a good deal in my opinion.

Yep it is on sale now as of yesterday. $6.00 for two jars. They had one of those promotion ladies handing out samples.

They still had 1/2 a pallet yesterday. I bought 14 jars for all of $41 :)

No sign of it today in Richmond either

I knew once they did a tasting, it would fly out of the store.

Rats...but hopefully they'll be able to continue bringing it in on a regular basis. Costco is unpredictable that week you'll have it, one week you wont.

Indeed, I'm gradually learning to stock up on things when they turn up. I've got 10 jars of the Batali sauce stocked up in the pantry and one basil White Linen left.

Wonder if we should have a local Costco finds topic on the go?
OT but anyone see the Kirkland Rwandan coffee around? (downtown is sold out). Great stuff.

A new thread is a great idea especially for someone like myself who has just joined and is just trying to figure out what to look out for and what location to find it at
