Veggie and seafood suggestions for St. Louis Central West End/Midtown area

  • r

We'll be in St. Louis for a week starting Monday, and are looking for really really good vegetarian and fish restaurants. We'll be staying in the Central West End/Midtown area, though we'll have a car and can travel anywhere for the best food.

We like all kinds of food, ethnic and otherwise, and are sophisticated and adventurous eaters. Would appreciate your suggestions for restaurants to try.

Also, where can we find the best selection of imported, high end cheeses? We'll happily drive away from our area to find the best cheeses.

Thanks for your help!

  1. Well, this is the Midwest, so seafood is not a particularly remarkable product, although most of our good restaurants do have it and we have some good suppliers. Our single CWE vegetarian spot is long gone. That said, Oceano in Clayton (the municipality on the west side of Forest Park) is popular and good. The best vegetarian dishes are found at ethnic restaurants. The Indian spot India's Rasoi is in the CWE; I haven't been in a while but reports are good. In addition, Duff's in the CWE is not vegetarian, but like many restaurants born in the '70's, is vege-friendly. The chef, Jim Voss, cooked for the Grateful Dead for weeks at a time with lots of vege dishes. Their website has the current menu, and they're generally happy to work with folks if you give them some advance notice.

We have a couple of good cheese places in Clayton. The Wine Merchant has a small, select stock that's very good. The Wine and Cheese Place has a larger stock.

That should get you started. And I hope you've looked at other St. Louis threads. Almost every restaurant has at least one seafood dish (especially now that Lent has begun; this city is still very Catholic) and one vege entree.

    1. You might consider Gokul, an Indian restaurant whose buffet is completely vegetarian. http://www.gokulrestaurant.com/ It's run by a very nice family and it certainly is a bargain.

Yes, and their Delmar location is close to the CWE. Good catch, alan.

Have only been to the Page Ave. location and, since I live in the CWE, I was delighted to learn of this second location. Have you tried it?

          1. re: alan

Not yet - some night before theater, I suspect.

            1. re: lemons

A dangerous thing to do pre-theater, I fear, since I tend to eat more than I really require and this is food with a kick that may have unwelcome consequences in close quarters.

      2. Check out the menu for Terrene.

Terrene is extremely accommodating to vegetarians and a terrific choice.

        2. Everest, on Manchester just west of Sarah, in Forest Park Southeast/ "The Grove," is very vegetarian friendly and delicious.
The owners, Devi and Connie States, are from Nepal and Korea, respectively.
They have a lunch buffet that is quite good: and it is available on Sundays for brunch.
          Enjoy, p.j.
