Shad roe

Has anyone seen any signs of shad roe yet? I guess it's a little early but it should be starting down south soon.

Went shopping at the local H Mart here in Northern New Jersey tonight. Whole Shad minus the roe was $1.99/b.....whole fish cleaned and scaled was less than 5 bucks. A nice cheap meal.....too bad the roe was not available.

FreshDirect (the NYC-based grocery delivery service) has it now. $9.99 per pair.

We had some fillets from Giant supermarket about a week ago. We did not see roe and I do recall last year many markets esp the supermarkets were not carrying it as it is not popular enough. Wegmans had it last year BUT they wanted $11.99 EACH pair, not per pound, No thanks.

I don't really have any recipes. I just poach the roe abit to be sure it cooks through, then saute in butter. The shad fillet, i just saute in butter with salt and pepper. I keep it simple to savor the taste of the roe and shad. I may squeeze a little lemon at the table but that's it.
