Metromix "Best" - Seriously?
I just read the "best of" list in the local paper. Who is voting for these places? Best Chinese - PF Changs? Best Italian is a restaurant in Rhinebeck? If I was going to travel 80 miles for Italian food - I'd much rather go to Brooklyn (and it's closer). Who is voting for these places?
There is no need to travel 80 miles for Italian food at Gigi's in Rhinebeck. It's not an Italian restaurant--the Chef/Owner states on the web site that it is Hudson Valley Mediterranean. In fact, that's the title of her latest cookbook.
Also,I went onto the Metromix web site expecting to see Best Hamburger-McDonald's
i'll make a slight defense of one of your points above. please note i'm in dutchess county, my knowledge of most things that aren't dutchess (or ulster) is limited.
gigi trattoria (which i have NOT been to) is thought of pretty highly by other people; i was at a very good restaurant in another part of the country being served by a CIA person who (when she found out i was from dutchess county) said i *had* to go to gigi's. having said that, it might be good, but the consensus seems to be that aroma osteria / il barilotto (wappingers/fishkill) and mercato (red hook) are both better for italian.
you said "if i was going to travel 80 miles for italian food" - but that's not the qualifier. it's only in certain counties - which are westchester up to dutchess, and orange. so although brooklyn is closer - hey, you could also get to the bronx for better italian - it's not in their list of eligible locations.
on other stuff from there...
bull * buddha - best new, best sushi. this place has had a WIDE range of opinions. i've already posted about it elsewhere. "best new", i can understand (though i wouldn't have voted it that, even in pok), but best sushi? i'm stunned.
however, remember that the people are only voting on those that are nominated. so there has to be a certain amount of public relations or something behind the nominations, and then, they have to get the most votes. that would instantly give advantages towards those places which are in the most populated areas (westchester) and best known.
terrapin's nowhere near the best place in dutchess, for example. but it's better known than the other places which blow it away (serevan, artist's palate are two).
there's other things which can influence these kind of polls (starbucks can beat a "better" coffee, *even when nearly everyone who compares the two prefers the 'other' coffee*) but they're more exercises in statistics than anything else.
