Niko's Cafe - Good Greek in Old Saybrook
Having just acquired some fromage from Fromage, I needed something to round out lunch and decided to stop at the recently opened Niko's Cafe, a deli/restaurant/bakery on Rt. 1 (just east of Main St.). A large table of people were just finishing breakfast, and looked very satisfied with their meal.
Although the lunch listing had many Greek specialties, I opted for their Chicken Augolemieno (sp?) Soup, a creamy concoction loaded with chicken and orzo. The dessert counter had many tempting offerings, but the siren call of a strawberry-topped cheesecake was irresistible. The portions on both were generous and the price quite reasonable. As I left with my takeout bags I made a note to return soon for some gyros or stuffed peppers.
Their website, http://nikoscafect.com/index.htm , looks like a work in progress, but this place is definitely worth a visit for breakfast or lunch, Chowhounders.
