Los Angeles Area

Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the Greater Los Angeles Area (including Orange & Ventura Counties and SW San Bernardino County)

SF Hounds on a Budget need good cheap eats!

Howdy, Hounds!
Three thrifty hounds will be driving down to stay at Hollywood Hills Best Western (Franklin @ Carmen).
Planning to visit Fashion Museum in downtown (919 S. Grand) and LACMA (Wilshire @ Fairfax). Particularly interested in non-chains, gay bars, memorable noshies.
Leaving on Monday--thanks so much!

  1. The legendary farmer's market near Lacma is your friend! And the Grove nearby has a couple of decent happy hours.

        1. Downtown: Grand Central Market. Try Sarita's Pupuseria.

Sunday AM Hollywood Farmer's Market. Lots of cooked foods available.

And maybe food trucks would fit the bill for you.

YES to grand central market!! The food is cheaper and IMO much more interesting and satisfying than anything at the old farmers' market.

Versailles for Cuban-style rotisserie chicken is a cheap tasty meal.

Taco trucks all over the place; perhaps a local could suggest a few? I haven't lived in LA in awhile.

          2. Best Fish Taco in Ensenada for fish taco's $1.50, shrimp taco's $2.00, drinks $1.00 (that's the menu).

Head east on Franklin for about 2 miles and make a right on Hillhurst go 5 blocks and it's on the left.

            1. Thai Town is on the eastern edge of Hollywood on Hollywood Blvd.

I'm not familiar with the Thai offerings in that area, but maybe some CH's can make some suggestions.

              1. re: monku

Thai Town - Jitlada is a big fave on this board - very good Southern Thai specialties (I recommend ordering dishes you are not familiar with). Sapp Coffee Shop has a great Boat Noodle. If you want Thai late, check out Sanamluang - the same-named noodle bowl is a superstar. Not Thai but in Thai Town - Paru's is excellent Southern Indian Vegetarian and their lunch specials are cheap.

The 101 Cafe in your hotel has great milkshakes and has a fun old-school diner decor.

              2. In front of and to the east of LACMA at lunchtime you will find more than a dozen food trucks. Around the corner on La Brea is Tinga. Their tacos aren't cheap--but they are generous sized portions, and the flavors are so intense that they leave you feeling extremely satisfied. Three could eat 2 taco plates and a side salad and be very satisfied. Then head down the street to Yogurtland and get $1.50 worth of frozen yogurt and fruit for a palate cleanser.

Definitely the food trucks across from LACMA. Also, Loteria at Farmers Market nearby.

Downtown, head to Wood Spoon for great brazilian, about a 5 minute walk.
