Eastern Garden in Sussex, New Jersey - surprisingly amazing

sockii Mar 4, 2011 12:47 PM

I've been going to this place for several years and it never seems to get any attention, so I just have to give them a shout-out. I live near Philadelphia yet I cannot get any sushi and Japanese food near me as good as I can when I visit my mom, who lives near Sussex NJ & Eastern Garden.

From the outside it looks like your typical junky strip mall Chinese restaurant, but their food is truly exceptional. Extremely fresh and well prepared Chinese and Japanese, but the best is really their sushi. They do everything from house special rolls to traditional sashimi and nigiri as good as I've had it in a big city, if not better. I just don't get how they pull it off considering their location, but they do.

If you go, don't miss the Golden Dragon roll (lobster meat in soy wrapper) or Tuna Love, which just melts in your mouth. It's also insanely reasonably priced, byob and with two decent liquor stores nearby. The Age Tofu is also great and there's a Chinese entree of Scallops with Broccolli in Garlic Sauce to die for.

I wrote a lengthier review elsewhere once before (http://www.associatedcontent.com/arti...) but have since tried yet more from their menu and have never been disappointed.

Sounds like a clone of Wild Ginger in Ridgewood. You should try that place also.

I don't get to Ridgewood, like, ever. I live in Gloucester County but my mom lives near Sussex. Every time I go up to visit her we have a standing date to go to Eastern Garden; she used to live in Brooklyn and Manhattan and missed big city Japanese food.

I just really like Eastern Garden's food. *shrug* I'm close enough to Philly to get the best of their sushi offerings regularly but honestly find EG's rolls and sashimi as good if not better for the price.

So what type of Chinese food is this? Aside from fresh (I prefer fermented flavors).

On the blog it looks more like Asian Fusion than Chinese. A lot like Wild Ginger, also with a sushi bar. I don't think it's for you. Not very " authentic".

I do like Wild Ginger, mainly for their wonderful fresh vegetables in their preparations. Many of the dishes are not sticky-sweet, either. You should give it another shot.

WG has a great $6 lunch special with soup and a main dish. Really a retro price!
