ISO dinner for two in Arcadia (near arboretum)...ANY cuisine...

Hello,

My wife and I are going to the L.A. Arboretum tomorrow.

We would like to grab an early dinner afterwards.

Can you please recommend a restaurant for two, any cuisine, it doesn't have to be cheap but not super fancy since we won't be dressed up.

Thanks in advance!

JEFF

  1. Hi Jeff!

Very popular w/CHers is DinTai Fung - dintaifungusa.com. It''s a stone throw. Chinese dumplings and very delicious! Next door is Phoenix Food Boutique for unique Asian (chinese) desserts. If you like Mango, I recommend the mango rolls (fresh mango rolled in coconut). :)

    1. within walking distance? If you want to drive a couple miles, you can just go down baldwin, chang's garden on duarte and baldwin, I guess din tai fung if you want to brave the crowds. A little further down is JYTH.

      1. Din Tai Fung is very popular. Also close by is Sinbala for Taiwanese food and shaved ice and 101 Noodle Express-probably the best beef rolls I've ever had. In the other direction from these places, but still close is Zelos for deep dish cornmeal crust pizza (I particularly like their fresh corn and carmelized onion topping!).

        1. It depends on your definition of walking distance. There's the Westfield mall nearby with its usual complement of mall food (it's not actually a compliment). Farther south on Baldwin, you have a number of casual restaurants (mostly Chinese). Here are a few off the top of my head:

Tasty Garden: Hong Kong style food, located just south of Baldwin and Duarte
Garden Cafe: Hong Kong style food, located just south of Baldwin and Huntington
101 Noodle Express: Shandong style food, located just north of Baldwin and Duarte
Chang's Garden: Shanghai style food, located just east of Baldwin and Duarte
Din Tai Fung: Shanghai style food, located just north of Baldwin and Duarte.
Sinbala: Taiwanese style food, located just east of Baldwin and Duarte
Full House Seafood: Cantonese seafood, located on Golden West (one block east of Baldwin and Duarte)
Moffett's Family Restaurant: chicken pot pies, located one block south of Baldwin and Duarte
Seouljung: Korean BBQ, located just south of Baldwin and Duarte

I personally like Tasty Garden and 101 Noodle Express.

Some of these, such as 101 Noodle Express, are cash only.

Thanks everyone for the fantastic responses!

FYI - I do not need walking distance, we are driving.

I have been to Din Tai Fung. Actually went there before it hit the Chowhound radar.

            Thanks again for the suggestions....

            JEFF

Wow, that would be between 2000 (when they opened) and January 2001!

Many good suggestions here. I would also add:

Matt Denny's (between 1st and 2nd on Huntington), for casual American food with an unusual attention to detail and lots of homemade touches.

Yang Chow is a little bit to the west on Colorado in Pasadena. Good old-style Chinese-American food.

Also in that vicinity is the original Top's -- good counter-service burgers and the like.

There's little worth a stop in Santa Anita Mall. Perhaps the best option is a branch of Woodfire BBQ.

            3. I'd second the suggestion for Chang's Garden. Mrs. O and I have had some extremely pleasant meals there, and I've been impatient to get a larger group together so we could explore the menu better. Very friendly and welcoming waitpeople, ready to explain anything, and the room is pretty and comfortable.

Yang Chow was my late FIL's favorite place - we always had to have the orange beef and the slippery shrimp, which I actually enjoyed despite basically not approving of either one - but the attention to detail by the kitchen is I think above average, the goodness of such simple things as sautéed spinach being a good example.
