Authentic Chinese/Taiwanese banquet recommendations north of Boston?

Hello. I'm looking for a Chinese restaurant that can do an authentic Chinese banquet in the north of Boston area. We live in southern NH, where the options are few to none. I'm hosting a banquet for my father's 75th birthday and look to have 4-5 tables. My family is from Taiwan, so the food must be good! Would prefer Taiwanese cuisine, but am open to other suggestions. Any thoughts?

  1. I would recommend Szechuan Chef in Vinal Square in Chelmsford. I do believe that the owner is from Taiwan originally and would probably be very happy to work with you. We used to go there for lunch when I worked in Nashua and just tell him to cook whatever he wanted for us. Never disappointed us.

    1. Have you tried Formasa Taipai in Nashua??
Im sure they would work with you and they have some good authentic cuisine. Love their soup dumplings and their 3 cup chicken is excellent too. Taiwanese is their thing.. They have some nice big round table for 10 or so

Yes, I've tried them, but they are closed for renovations. Also some talk going around that the chef recently quit after fighting with the owners and now it's all gone downhill. Too bad. They might have been an option for us. I am looking for a place that can accommodate 4-5 tables, though. That's 40-50 people.

When did all that happen? I was there about 3 weeks ago and it was great. Plenty of space for 40-50 there.

I have been to Szechuan Chef only once, its a small place and you would fill it. I only had "Szechuan" food there and was dissapointed.

Maybe Mulan in Waltham will be open in time. That many people would practically fill the place.

I guess they closed for renovations on March 1. Hopefully they'll re-open and be as good as before, but I'll need to host this banquet by the end of March.

            Thanks for the suggestions!

hargau, have you been to the Formosa Taipei in Lexington?

I have not. My understanding is its takeout only

            1. re: hargau

I've been. You *can* eat there on a stool by a narrow counter (no tables), but I took out.

              Food was very good.

        3. you have 2 options north (though not *terribly* north) of the City.

If you're looking for Northern style banquet cooking, Sichuan Garden II in Woburn has a KNOCKOUT banquet room upstairs and is located in a 17th century mansion...take a look at the pictures its pretty cool. Dont let the fake looking setup downstairs fool you either...if you know what to get the banquet menu is real authentic stuff. their website is and they post their online menu in both english and chinese...a huge plus. Almost had my wedding banquet here, but the largest room was still slightly too small :

The other option is, ironically, ALSO in Woburn, though on the other side of it. New China Pearl ( ) is Cantonese style, and I think their banquet packages are a little on the pricey side...but the food is solid. It's an old Wu's, so its designed like a chinese palace.

Both are directly off 95, so easily accessible.

man, I'm kina glad all my outside the city banquet research came in handy someday :D

Thanks for this. Sichuan Garden did come up as a possibility. I'll check it out. My family has gone to New China Pearl for dim sum and that might work for a banquet too.

May I ask where you ended up having your wedding banquet?

            1. re: sabchen

Actually, after all the work I had put in, I ended up chucking it all and doing it at Empire Garden downtown! LOL

When I found out Gypsy Rose Lee used to perform there in its former life as a vaudeville theatre....I was just enchanted. So we did the wedding at the Arlington street church on the other side of the Common and made it all work :)

As it turned out, the food was also delicious! But really wouldn't suit your desire to stay out of Ctown proper :)

Sichuan Garden in woburn does have very good food, especially if you like SIchuan style. Great building too.
