Insane heat in the valley of the sun?

Thai or Chinese, burgers or BBQ, if it's really spicy I love it. I don't mean a jalapeño cheeseburger, either, yummy though those are. That won't pass my SHU minimum. Where can one satisfy intense capsaicin cravings in the Phoenix metro area?

  1. I'm pretty good about cleaning my plate, but, I've considered surrender a few times. The most painful was Swaddee Thai in Chandler, and I'm sure they would have made it even hotter. The Scottsdale location is more restrained, in my experience.

I had something at Malee's on Main that made me uncomfortable. The fact that it was about 115 degrees that day may have contributed.

I definitely got an endorphin buzz from a meal at Los Dos Molinos on S. Central in Phoenix.

Another vote for both Los Dos Molinos and Swaddee Thai! Note that not everything at Los Dos is all that spicy, and there's a lot of variability depending on the chiles they have that day; ask your server what's the hottest. Swaddee in Chandler will make things really hot if you ask them to. Most places seem afraid to do that, but not them! There's also something called the "Burger of Fire" at McCool's bar in Chandler that's made with ghost peppers, but I've never had it.

    2. I saw a reference to a place called "Black Mountain BBQ" and its "Firebird Chicken". Their habañero/orange glaze sounded yummy, but I don't see that item in the menu on their website. Did they discontinue it?

The Firebird is not on the online menu, but they have it, sure enough! OMG. f*@&ing hot if you accidentally eat one of the habaneros in the sauce! Watch out-- that orange thing is not an orange!!! The chicken itself is not frighteningly hot to a person who really likes hot stuff, but still has a strong kick.

      2. hot is relative. haven't found any place here that is really hot if you can really handle the heat. The hottest places we've ever been were all caribbean...but haven't been to any caribbean places in phoenix yet.

Do they have Caribbean joints in Phoenix? Lots of them in South Florida, should you find yourself in that part of the world.

I like the The Breadfruit (Jamaican), though have only had appetizers there - peppered prawns with roti, Jamaican patties, curried shrimp, jerk chicken. For me, nice heat, though not super-spicy. Great cocktails (Rosemary's Pistol, Hemingway Daiquiri, Kingston Rum punch) and rum flights too in the adjacent RumBar.
