Romantic restaurant in San Jose?

kellya29 Mar 2, 2011 10:49 AM

Hi, I am posting for a friend who is having her 30th wedding anniversary. They are staying at the Fairmont and would like something pretty close to their hotel. I've done a tiny bit of research and came up with Paolos or Le Papillon...any comments on these or their location? Any other ideas? American, French, or Italian preferred. Thanks!

Paolos would be good. It's high end and walking distance (several blocks) from the Fairmont.
Papillon is not downtown, not close to their hotel.
I love the new Italian place, Paesano. It's in a remodeled Victorian and would be about a 15-minute walk from the hotel.

The grill on the alley would be another good place. Dimly lit, traditional steakhouse atmosphere

71 Saint Peter is a bit more intimate of a place with good food and a nice wine list. Maybe a 6 block walk or 3 min drive. There are much better choices if willing to drive 10-15 min. Le Papillion is old school French in the best way and one of the hidden gems of the south bay. Old -school in that it is a coat and tie, butter and cream type place with excellent technique and delicious food. Somewhat formal but that is what you want on a grand anniversary. 20 minutes will get you to Manresa, perhaps the best in the Bay Area. A spurge but well worth it!

If they are willing to drive, there is also La Foret in Almaden Valley. French and romantic.

Another stand by that is forgotten but great for this kind of meal! Thanx for reminding us.

We had a terrible meal there about two months ago. Cheesy music in the background, tasteless and overpriced food. Really really has gone downhill in my opinion. I used to like this place....

So sorry....71 Saint Peter is the one that was so disappointing, outright lousy food. Such a shame because the space and location are excellent.

71 Saint Peter is not as celebratory as Le Papillon, which is a 4- mile drive, but has beautiful food. Le Foret and Plumed Horse are farther yet, but worth the drive.

Too bad. 71 was once a great fall back place with a wonderful seasonal tasting menu. That option has been gone for a year or so and it has been about that long since I last ate there. Another one bites the dust?
