Chosing wine to go with southern French dinner

Going for southern french food tonight, likely a cassoulet / duck confit. I'm looking at what I have on hand to drink with it, but I have less French wines than i usually do in stock, any clear winner, I'm looking to try something new (but that I have in stock), so that I haven't tried?

I have a Michel Rolland 2009 (I believe mostly Merlot with some Cab). Also, a Chateau Bujan 2008 (Cotes de Bourg), the 2007 was great, I'm wondering if it too early to drink the 2008? I also have a Deveze 66 2007 that I am looking forward to, but it is from the Languedoc-Roussillon region, and maybe too fruity for this. Otherwise, I can go with either a Chateau Lamothe 2007 or 2008, can't remember (Premieres Cotes de Bordeaux) or a Chateau Lousteauneuf 2008 (Medoc).

Any clear winners?

  1. Wines from the "Cassoulet Region" tend to be big, inky and tannic. Think Madiran. I don't think Bordeaux goes well at all. If you're definitely going with what you have on hand, I would choose the Languedoc-Roussillon. It's a blend that comes closer than the others.

      Any chance you have a Malbec on hand?

      That's the varietal used to make Cahors, the famous "black wine" of southwest France -- and it's mindblowing with cassoulet.

        Actually, for a winter dish, I think Cahors is a better match for cassoulet
        than an Argentinian Malbec, which is likely to be too round. Cahors is more
        rustic, but in a good way. Make sure to open the Cahors several
        hours in advance. Madiran is also a fine choice, for the same reason.

          but it's the same varietal, so at least somewhat down the same path...and I wouldn't even begin to assume someone has a Cahors on the rack.

    2. I haven't had anjy of the wines that you have, but can tell that some, or most, are Bordeaux. In any case, if I were to pick from your list above, then I'll venture to try the bottle from Laguedoc-Rousillon. I love the version of cassoulet in those parts, there.

      I'd also keep one of the Bdx handy .... I've stepped on more minefields of crappy wines from Languedoc than anywhere else.
