MacDonald's Shamrock Shakes returning to Canada
Looks like we'll be getting the shakes back this year—hope they're as good as I remember!
McDonald’s brings back the Shamrock Shake after long hibernation (Daily Brew)
While its sightings became as unpredictable in recent years as the typical leprechaun after it disappeared for the better part of 10 years, McDonald's Canada has quietly relaunched its Shamrock Shake.
The delicacy designed to commemorate St. Patrick's Day was first introduced in 1970, and it fleetingly returned in 2008, after a five-year absence. But it wasn't on Canadian menus for the two years that followed.
McDonald's will serve the minty milkshake at all its standalone locations across Canada through April 4, more than two weeks after the day in honour of the patron saint of all things green, especially green drinks.
The fast-food chain has seemed eager to let news of the Shamrock Shake's return spread through viral channels. A suspiciously independent-looking website dedicated to the elusive concoction has also invited people to submit their shake sightings by state. And, over the weekend, the pages dedicated to Canadian provinces started filling up.
American locations have re-introduced the Shamrock in conjunction with other flavoured McCafé Shakes, evidently designed to give McD's some Starbucks-style appeal, as the frosty drinks are served in a clear cup with whipped cream, and a cherry on top.
No such pretentiousness would appear necessary across Canada, given the pent-up demand for its return, even if the Shamrock Shake isn't exactly what nutritionists have in mind when they advise eating more greens.
I had a shamrock shake at a McDonald's in TO a couple years ago. Think I saw them last year too.
Ordered a Shamrock Shake last night (on Long Island, NY) --- size LARGE seemed smaller than in the past -- came in a clear cup, with domed lid and whip cream with maraschino cherry. Definitely a different presentation than last year. Still as yummy! It is a shame that it only comes round once a year... maybe McD's could offer a pumpkin shake for Halloween-Thanksgiving. (?)
