Good bakeries in the Des Moines area?

I like the Highland Bakery on the North Side for cookies and pastries....I am guessing they do cakes too. I have just never had one from there.

Can't help with cake, but D&D on Merle Hay and Franklin has some real good bread.
First thing my daughter has to have when back home visiting from Denver.

The Bake Shoppe at the NW corner of 66th and University in Windsor Heights. David, the owner, makes the old Barbara's champagne cake amongst many others. He also does pastry, bread, etc. He's also catered a reception party I held.

I have to second this. Their basic vanilla petit fours is still one of my favorite things there.

If you're looking for Cheesecake (and if she still does it) the wife of the owner of Lucca makes a wonderful one with caramel and caramelized apples.
