  1. My wife and I had dinner at Ditch Plains last Friday night. Overall, we liked it -- although there are some "just opened" issues. First, the food was really good. We shared a Manhattan clam chowder. Lots of chunks of clams and very tasty. My wife had the broiled fish special (can't recall the exact fish, but it was simple and delicious). It came with a mound of green salad. I had the fish and chips, which I enjoyed. Lots of crisp chips -- enough fries so wandering hands could satisfy themselves but leave enough for me too. I think the fish had a light coating and then quickly fried (which is good -- I hate all that batter making the fish soggy)

The service was a little ditzy. When we asked the waiter for his favorite dishes, he didn't name a single fish dish. He messed up the wine order -- but when he realized it, he fixed it quickly and graciously. They seem to focus on half-bottles instead of individual glasses of wine.

The meal was about $80 for the two of us (1 app, 2 mains, a half-bottle of wine) including tax/tip less the 15% f&f discount (which I think has since expired).

The room itself is pretty pedestrian. There are flat screens over the bar with endless loops of surfing. Maybe they were trying to recreate a plain fish shack, but ended up with achieving boring instead of quaint. All in all, the food will keep me coming back but it won't be my go-to place.

    1. It doesn't have the same neighborhood vibe as the downtown outpost, but I thought the food at Ditch Plains on the UWS was at least as good. I tried two dishes that I've had in the Village branch: the spicy calamari salad and the chicken pot pie, and both were terrific. It isn't earth-shattering food, but it's a worthwhile addition to the UWS scene.

      1. the televisions have got to go. they are a distraction and an annoyance, and add no character to the otherwise empty space.

other than that, we had no complaints after a dinner there last week. i ordered light - nachos followed by Ditch Dogs - two hot dogs covered in mac & cheese, served over fries. i left feeling not proud of what i had done, but smiling nonetheless.

        1. Just came back from lunch at Ditch Plains UWS. Had the oyster Po Boy (delicious), friend had shrimp Po Boy (likewise), another had Ditch Dogs combo (one topped with mac & cheese, the other with chili - both were very good). Husband had the Big Marc burger (spicy sauce with delicious butter pickles), which was very good but for the bun (supposedly made with cheddar & black pepper) - it was too dry & was either stale or just over-toasted. We mentioned that to the hostess & our waiter, so hopefully that won't happen again. Would certainly go back to try other dishes.

          1. We had dinner last night at Columbus Tavern (I guess we're making the rounds of new UWS restaurants). Started with braised pork nachos (good), red curry mussels (good), "BLT" dumplings (disappointingly unexciting). Mains were brisket/marrow burger (very good) with great fries, Friday night fish stew (excellent) and lamb shepherd's pie (uninteresting). Chocolate tart w/mascarpone whipped cream was typical but good. Service was very good; noise tolerable; large wine list. Good neighborhood place for relatively simple food and/or pre-theater.

              1. re: carcrash

Having only been to Ditch Plains, I would return there before going to CT. The menu is more appealing to me and I've heard a lot negative comments on Col. Tavern.

                1. re: coasts

I agree - if I had to choose between the 2, I'd prefer Ditch Plains. More interesting choices.
