Drink recommendations near the Metropolitan Museum?

We are coming into town for the weekend and want to take advantage of the Met's late hours on Saturdays (until 9pm). We are staying in Midtown. I was thinking that we might eat early and then go to the Met until late, then try to get a drink afterward nearby. Or, I could do it in the reverse--get a drink in either Midtown or by the Met and eat dinner late.

It doesn't matter to us. Mainly, I am looking for a place that won't be elbow to elbow with a very young crowd and a few nice wines by the glass/decent beer. Thanks for your help.

You might want to consider Cafe Boulud's Bar Pleiades (separated from the dining room by a short hallway), on 76th, just off Madison. Given the clientele C.B. attracts, I doubt you will be elbow-to-elbow with a young crowd.

agree with RGR that Bar Pleiades will provide the crowd/vibe you're seeking. I'd like to throw Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle into the mix. Great taste of old New York and bartenders who know how to mix a martini that will roll your socks down.

I appreciate both suggestions. I had looked into Pleiades earlier in the day and given it some thought. Is the Bemelmans at the Carlyle the only bar in there? I've passed through many times but never had a drink. I am thinking that the Carlyle may be more formal than what we need. We are in the under 40 crowd ourselves but just don't particularly relish the intense crowds at some conventional bars. I would dearly love to sit but know that might be too much to ask on a Sat night.

I have not been yet - but how about The Mark? Don't know about the bar scene there but perhaps somebody could weigh in...

I like The Mark for cocktails. I like the drinks as well as the lighting and furniture. That's where I would go.

Yes, it is the only bar there.
