It's under new ownership and they are rethinking and renaming the entire concept. Not 100% sure if it's going to be a sports bar though (I thought that was the place next door, same owners).

I'm disappointed it's closing as well. I was a fan of Commonwealth.

yeah, i wouldnt say it was the best food ever but the deviled sweetbreads were nice when they had them. i loved to have a place to get a scotch egg. the burger was good (i am an afficianado of a good burger) and i really liked the sticky toffee pudding (though i can make better ;))

but i think it was better for the price than againn. what other options are there? drawing.. a ... blank...

I guess I never tried the signature dishes then... maybe that was my real problem. I wasn't impressed by the burger; the ones I had were all bland and relied too much on the toppings for flavor vs actually seasoning the meat. The fries were just okay. The gravy (I think?) was not okay. The salads were overdressed. I enjoyed all the beers I had, and that's pretty much all I liked about that place. As far as the ambiance/environment goes, the restaurant itself was a bit too echo-y for me to have a conversation as the sound was out of control, and all the times I went, a member of the staff dropped something glass, which shattered everywhere.

        Maybe I'm just a jinx?

I think their menu started out much more interesting than it became.

We went last week, and our waiter explained about the company who developed the apartment building it's in buying it and said they're planning to turn it into a "Clyde's-like" place. And he and the rest of the staff are all out of work now (that only came up when I asked). We had meant to go one last time for scotch eggs and then didn't get there in time. Oh well.

They had a limited menu the last few weeks. Scotch eggs were not on it. I tried!

The menu last week (their last week) looked the same as usual, at least did have scotch eggs on it (but I didn't order them, so maybe they didn't actually have them). The really interesting snout-to-tail sort of stuff seemed to have dropped off a long time ago, though. But it's all moot now, anyway. I do agree with Elyssa about the pate. I liked the fried olives too, I did get those last week.

They handed out the regular menu, but it was for the back side only (the drinks). They had another menu they handed out with it that had the food they were providing. I asked specifically about the scotch eggs and was told no, they were only serving what was on the other menu. :(

It was more affordable than Againn. I think of the 2 as different. Commonwealth was much more of a neighborhood restaurant. Their burger and pate was very good, as well as their Brussel sprouts side.

I think it sucks that it is becoming a sports bar, but honestly, I wasn't particularly impressed by the food at Commonwealth any of the times I went. What did you normally get? Maybe I just missed something.
