Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in New Orleans

An awesome get away to New Orleans!

My husband and I recently had a chance to visit NO for the first time...what a fantastic city, filled with beautiful people and so much character...we will definitely visit again.

Here are a few quick reviews of places we visited during our stay.

Acme Oyster in French Quarter [dinner] - fantastic casual food, some of the best fried shrimp and charbroiled oysters I have had...ever!

Central Grocery [lunch] - I was worried about all of the hype...but oh so true, delicious fresh muffuleta, great for a cheap affordable lunch...

Cochon [dinner] - again, read lots of good reviews and was worried about this being an 'it' spot without having the food to support it...fantastic upscale BBQ restaurant...worth the 30min wait.

Croissant d'Or Patisserie [breakfast] - a bit dingy [dirty forks]...the coffee was weak...pastries + quiche [good pastry, but microwaved to warm] were ok...would not go back

Cafe Du Monde [snack] - yum yum yum...fried dough covered with sugar, delish...and the coffee + chicory...wonderful

EAT [dinner] - great gourmet home cooking...fantastic gumbo, and some delicious seasonal menu items...they recommend BYOB and no corking fee... which is great...sweet place

Creole Creamery [snack] - some of the best and most unique ice cream flavors I have ever tried...go for the sampler package...

Napoleon House [dinner] - food was ok...nothing special - on a scale from 1-10 a 4, but after the waiter made a few mistakes with our order, we were frustrated...we were very excited about this place and were very disappointed with our meal and service...would not go back or recommend...

Gumbo Shop [dessert] - fantastic bread pudding the serving staff was so wonderful...should have gone here for dinner rather than Napoleon House.

  1. Glad you had a nice visit! Just wish you didn't have as many "so-so" meals as you did, but given where you went, that's about as good as you could've hoped. You have a new goal for the next trip: nothing but stellar experiences! It can be done!

Thanks Salinger, all of the places we visited were review based...I was hoping they would hit the mark...definitely let us know your favorites...since we will definitely be coming back, I would love to try some other establishments...so please do suggest. Thanks.

I agree. Essentially a "lunch" tour. My only rec on the list would have been Central Grocery to pick up a muff to take home.

Yes we did Central Grocery twice...LOVE!

      2. Interesting. We're going to New Orleans in April for 4 nights, and I had thought of going to the Napoleon House for a muffaletta for lunch our first day. But it sounds as though you think Central Grocery is a better bet? We're definitely going to Cochon, and I thought of Boucherie as well. I looked up the website for EAT - looks pertty good as well.

If you want a sit down place perhaps Napoleon House is a better bet, if you want a delish muffuleta that you can enjoy al fresco in the square... definitely central grocery...we even brought back some of the olive salad with us...

Love the muff at Central Grocery . . . the muff at Napoleon House? Not so much.

OTOH, the Pimm's Cups are excellent, and there are other offerings on the lunch menu that I'd rather have here than a muffaleta.

i would really not advise Eat for dinner -- far, far better options to spend a valuable vacation dinner at. Iris, MiLa, Coquette, Brightsen's, etc.. Eat is popular w/ brunchers but i dont think it can compete for dinner.

Thanks for the reccs! We will definitely try something different next time we are in NO...
