Ned Ludd, Tasty & Sons, Evoe, Apizza Scholls, La Superior Tacqueria
Ned Ludd: This place could easily inspire an episode of Portlandia. Taking an idea, cooking in a wood oven, and going so far with it as to become absurd, nay, silly. I can see the players of adult hide and seek stopping in for s'mores. Some of the food was very good, the meat pie, the brussel sprouts...but the trout was, to my taste, cooked too long, the meat was dry. The fennel accompanying it was tasty but it looked awful. The mussels and salt cod as well as the pork belly were nice potato soups flavored with the meat and fish, but nothing I'd seek out. As with almost everyplace I went in Portland, very good beer was served seriously. The salad, cheese and charcutierie plates were nothing special. Maybe I'm just too midwestern to appreciate the conceptual rigor of this restauraunt plus performance art installation.
Evoe: Nice place. Very good sandwiches and salads served up quickly. The cheese counter at adjacent Pastaworks served up some terrific cheese. The meat counter has amazing coppa and very tasty salami. The italian wine selection is quite nice with wines from solid and under-rated producers like Abbona and Andrea Oberto.
Tasty & Sons: I loved the raddichio salad. Never had one that tasty. Expect I never will again. The carbonara was a gloppy, glutinous mess. The cassoulet was good. The wine was good too. There were some other courses I have forgotten, but my overall impression is, I'd go back to Tasty & Sons before I'd go to Ned Ludd.
Apizza Scholls: Good crust. Nice pie. They claim it's New Haven Connecticutt style. I don't know that much about pizza, but I'd eat their pies once a week if I lived in Portland.
La Superior Tacqueria: Made-to-order Guacamole, $2 tacos, decent Tamales, really really good corn tortillas, what's not to like? The salsa is good too. I prefered the red-brown smoky salsa to the green or chunky salsas.
