So where should I go for my birthday dinner?

Criteria: fabulous food (duh), pleasant and professional service, relaxed and romantic atmosphere in which DH and I can converse without screaming. Downtown, Heights, Washington Ave., Montrose, or Midtown. Price not too much of an object (special occasion and all that).
Mockingbird Bistro is a good example of what I'm thinking about, but I'm curious to see your suggestions. Thanks!

  1. Brennan's is my favorite romantic and special place in Houston. And the professionalism is unmatched, anywhere. It has been the site of many family occasions over the past 35 years I've been in Houston. If you go there, request one of the new tables around the perimeter of the lower floor dining room. The chairs themselves create a little private dining room.

We had a very good meal in a quiet and romantic environment not long ago at Brasserie Max & Julie on Montrose. The problem with French restaurants is the closeness of the tables, though. You get to hear other's romances too. Le Mistral is better at table placement and has awesome food.

If you like steak, the original Brenner's at I-10 & Wilcrest area is an intimate environment with great steaks. Get the truffle butter on top.

    1. Da Marco, Feast, Indika, and t'afia come to mind.

      1. I second Brennan's and DaMarco (and LeMistral too - but it is way out in the oil corridor). Other great/romantic places we like in that general area are: Mark's, Sorrento, Rainbow Lodge (if the hunting lodge feel doesn't bother you), or even better...Brenner's on the Bayou (in the old Rainbow Lodge spot), Damien's, one of my new favs...Zelko Bistro (though these last two can be loud), and 17.

Strange how experiences can vary, but I think of Mockingbird as a pretty loud place.

Thanks all--last night I decided on Rainbow Lodge. Looking forward to it.
I've only been to Mockingbird Bistro for lunch, and remember it as fairly quiet. Maybe it's livelier at night.

I know you've decided, but I thought of another place you might like if you like Mockingbird and that is Gravitas. - Just food for thought!
