Hidden Gem Restaurants in Edmonton?

Hello Chowhound!

My roommate and I have a dilemna! Both of us used to live in Vancouver and frequent a lot of little family-run restaurants & delicious one-stop 'fast food' places like a pizza place called Fresh Slice and a Fry shop... But we moved back to downtown Edmonton and all we find are chains!

We desperately are craving foods that aren't from a big name like Red Lobster or Brewsters. Does anyone know of any places? (Generally all we find down here are bars...)

EDIT: My roommate is a vegetarian!

There are lots of non-chain restaurants. Many are full-service places, so I won't list them all since you seem to be looking for the more simple places to get something quick. Here are a few that are closer to that category. Not all are vegetarian but I put a star besides the ones where I think might have the best options for a vegetarian:

Bangkok Express (Argyll Rd. and 99th St.) (might be ok for vegetarians if they eat prawns)
La Shish Taouk* (Jasper and about 117th St.)
Rodeo Burger (112th St. across from U of A hospital)
Pizza Famoso* (Jasper Ave. and 117th St., authentic thin crust Neapolitan style pizza)
Phobulous (109th St. at 87th Ave.)
Da Capo* (109th St. at 87th Ave.)
Soul Soup* (never been myself, but it's downtown and seems to have a good reputation)
Mrkt (again, haven't been yet as it's a new place but it's on Jasper Ave. at 105th St.)

Hope this helps, there is a lot more info about good local independent restaurants on this forum, for now I just listed the ones where you might stop in for a quick bite rather than a full multi-course meal.

Padmanadi is an excellent Asian vegetarian restaurant and is downtown.

Also, if you head across the river to Whyte Ave there is Cafe Mosaics, another vegetarian place, as well as many smaller restaurants all along that street.

Blue Plate Diner, and the High Level Diner are good places with many veggie options. I also like Ninh Kieu for Vietnamese in China Town and Dadeo for cajun on Whyte.

Sugarbowl has a nice veggie chili, as well Remedy cafe has Indian dishes and a cool university vibe. Planet Organic sells many vegetarian to go dishes, especially the south location as well Organic Roots cafe on Whyte ave has many veg options (I believe they are only open for lunch). Healthfare has 2 locations, one downtown and 1 in the deep south, they should have some veg options too.

Agree . Ninh Kieu for Vietnamese in China Town has many vegetarian items in the menu. The main cook/owner there used to work at The Dish.
