Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in New Orleans

A little help~!! Weekend in NOLA with great buddies

Need some guidance here! It's been a long time since I've been in NOLA, and I can't wait to get down there this spring. I'm headed to town on May 13 for the weekend...for a bachelor party. (gasp). This group is great. Everyone loves great restaurants and we are certainly looking for a great combo of fancy/cool food as well as divey bars/lunch spots. We have rented a house Garden district, so I think we're in the middle of things.

We are coming in on Friday afternoon and will head out midday on Sunday...This is a really quick trip, but here is what I'm thinking so far! Any suggestions, comments, ideas are greatly appreciated!

Friday - arrive, gather and head out to ????? for a few pre-dinner drinks
- Dinner at Cochon
- Drinks at ????
- Late night spot??

Saturday - Breakfast recommendation?
- lunch - we want to do crawfish and/or oysters. Acme? (yes? No?)
- Dinner at NOLA, Mondo?

Thanks a lot for any ideas! We're really excited to enjoy your awesome food.

  1. "Drinks" covers a lot. There are some good beer places uptown like the Bulldog on Magazine or Avenue Pub on St Charles. Near Cochon, Emeril's has nice bar if you're looking upscale.

Afterwards it depends on your crowd. There is the casino and Bourbon street, the music clubs on Fenchmen, or Bombay Club, Napoleon House, French 75.

Acme and Felix will work for oysters. but if you're further uptown there is Casimentos.

For dinner NOLA will work for a group of bachelors and is closer than Mondo. But if you do a general search here you will find there are some other French Quarter or Warehouse District restaurants that will provide good food in an atmospehere that is not too sedate.

If you give a few more details or preferences others may be able to give you some more specific choices.

    1. OK, here are my additions to your list:

      Drinks: Sazerac, or Carousel Bars
Breakfast: Stanley! or The Original Coffee Pot, both in the FQ
Dinner: NOLA impressed me, but then I do not know Mondo, so cannot comment.

I have also enjoyed: Stella!, Restaurant August, and Mila, as possible alternatives.

Good luck, and enjoy the trip,

      Hunt

      1. I would scratch Cochon and go to Emeril's. Tommy's is down the street and it's great too. I would go to Stella or Bayona in the FQ Saturday night. Mondo is near City Park and it's a pretty good ways from the GD. Susan Spicer owns Bayona and Mondo. You can get drinks at Lucy's two blocks from Emeril's. Go from 4/7 PM for happy hour and dine at Emeril's or Tommy's.

Go to Surrey's for breakfast in the LGD just S of St. Charles. Original French Market Restaurant on Decatur has crawfish and oysters. You can get crawfish across the street from the Bulldog on Magazine and eat at their outdoor patio. Cooter Brown's at Riverbend has good oysters and drinks.

        1. re: Littleman

I'd skip NOLA (go to Emeril's) and Mondo.

Another vote to skip NOLA. Emeril's is much better.

Are you looking for a beer joint, or real cocktails? If the latter, check out this recent eGullet post by Times-Picayune Food and Drinks correspondent, TA Price:

          2. Your friends would kill you if you drove them to Lakeview for any reason. Scratch Mondo. Surrey's is your breakfast spot or Slim Goody's if you want a greasy spoon diner. There are some great drinking spots Uptown like Delachaise, Cure, Monkey Hill and the strip on Magazine near Louisiana is always hopping. Cochon is a good place for a group of guys. If you want to head into the Quarter on Saturday, then NOLA is fine but I prefer K-Pauls for a bachelor party. You might have more fun at Jacues Imos Uptown on Oak Street followed by drinks at the new bar Oak or see live music at The Mapleleaf. One other thing, that is usually Tulane's graduation weekend so make your reservations now. If you want to hit on young college girls, head to F&Ms or Snake and Jakes (after 2am).
