looking for microbrews, gastropub fare and sun on a Sunday afternoon -

blackbookali Feb 26, 2011 02:46 PM

But not Father's Office Culver City. Somewhere off the 10 between downtown and Marina Del Rey. My first thought was Ford's Filling Station - any other ideas?

I inquired about gastropubs in general not too long ago. Here's the thread - I hope it gives at least a starting point:

Closer to DTLA than MdR are two places I haven't tried but want to - Golden State and Blue Palms Brew House. Golden State is burger-intensive, while Blue Palms has a very strong focus on tapped brews.

Golden State serves a decent burger and has a good beer selection but it's really kind of a hole in the wall. Not a place to hang out or hope to get some sun at.

Waterloo and City in Culver City is probably what you want. I've had some real good food there, including some pasta with sweetbreads, and a really good black pudding (for halloween, natch). But their best items are their awesome in-house charcuterie. The taps aren't as extensive as FO, but pretty decent.

Blue Palms has surprisingly good food too. Their truffle burger is one of the best burgers in town, I think it stands shoulder-to-shoulder alongside FO burger. The beer list is very impressive, there are always a few surprising rare brews there. Unfortunately it's not in the OP's target area. It's in Hollywood, great if you're waiting for a show at the Music Box next door.

I know it's a chain, but we really liked the Yard House at LA Live, when we were in the area for a show this past summer. 100 beers on tap. Great food. Kid friendly.

Waterloo & City or the Yard (not to be confused with the Yardhouse).

Waterloo looks really good, unfortunately we were looking to go earlier than their 5pm opening. Bookmarked for the future though, thanks.

Tha 5PM opening time is very common for a lot of the gastropubs, and why I didn't even consider W&C or A-Frame. And while not really far from the 10, neither are really close either. The two I mentioned above do have posted hours for Sunday afternoon. Definitely keep W&C on your "To-GO" list though - they're very good. Give their excellent charcuterie a go - great with drinks/conversation. The place fills up fast so make reservations.

For future reference, Waterloo is also open for Sunday lunch from 11:30-3.

                    Unless something has changed..
They do some really nice brunch type dishes, like a unique take on cornbeef hash with the corned beef and potatoes cut large dice with a savory sauce served in a staub with a poached egg. Good coffee ect..

I remember reading on their website a few weeks ago that they suspended the weekend brunches until they got their coffeeshop(?) setup? I don't see that on their site anymore but I still don't see the old brunch info either. I don't think they've started weekend lunches again yet.

that's a bummer, hope they start up again soon! The food was really good some of the best brunch food i've had on the west side and I love sitting by the front in the sunlight.. it's nice during the day

We were there as recently as a couple Sundays ago, and we were told that it's dinner only for now as well...
