Brampton finally has BBQ

Right beside Tinnels (awesome jamaican patties), north of Queen on Kennedy, a new place has opened up called RD's Southern BBQ
It seemed to be an african american family and are doing southern BBQ.. The lady seemed very friendly and outgoing, and the place smelled like a burning forest, a good sign! Big pictures of black & white jazz musicians on the walls but otherwise very plain, seems to be take-out only type place. However when I was there somebody was trying to order whole smoked chickens and they wouldn't be ready for another hour and a half in the smoker or something, so there may be availability issues on certain items.
I tried a rack of ribs with mac & cheese and thought it was really good, smokiest I've had to date in the GTA. Food is long gone but my hands smell like a campfire haha

Very curious to try their chicken, people were ordering both the Jerk and Smoked versions which has me interested.. I wish them good luck because that's gonna be a tough area for BBQ since it tends to be on the expensive side! If anyone else tries it, I'd be curious to hear if it was a good experience or if I just got lucky

Hi all, first time posting.
I went to RD BBQ based on this review because I was in the area for business. The lady told me they were open for 3 weeks now. I had the lunch special with the ribs and fries. The ribs were very good - tender and flavourful. The sauce didn't stand out... next time I will try the 'hot' sauce that other people ordered. Decent value, considering you get a protein, side and drink for $6+tax.
The area is a bit sketchy. A guy came in while I was eating and asked the cashier if she could give him any money - she refused and he left. The manager apologized to those of us eating. When I left the restaurant, another guy came up to me and asked for change. I politely refused, but he kept on persisting before I could get to my car. Not wanting any trouble, I asked him if I could buy him lunch at RD's. He wanted Subway. So I bought him a sub and got the hell outta there.
The food is good and the staff is nice, but my overall experience was a bit hampered by the stuff that happened. I'll go back, maybe with a group of people though.
Haha I know what you mean about the area in appearance, and theres definitely some bums/crackheads that will wander over from nearby Church street, but if you look directly across the street from exiting RD's you'll see there's a big high school there, which means there are always PLENTY of cops in the area, it's pretty safe really
Beggers are annoying but honestly I just say "No I work for a living sorry" and walk away, I wouldn't worry about having to buy them lunch although the gesture of offering to get them food from RD's was very generous of you! What a moron for picking Subway over RD's LOL
The food is good and thats all that matters really, I'm looking forward to going back this week!
I just finished the pulled pork sandwich (mild) with M&C and it was well worth the $7. Great flavour, the roll was awesome (better than some plain old white bun) and the meat was soft and tender. I really wanted the cornbread but they were out (at 2:00????)! The lady working there said the cornbread always runs out first.
I'll be back for sure.
As for the sketchyness of the area, I only had some young kid asking me to buy him a pack of smokes. I politely declined and that was that.
Had the half chicken dinner tonight for take-out and it was delicious. VERY smokey, and the guy who's usually there (RD?) was in the back cooking and the place smelled great, smokey before I even walked through the door, a great sign
My only regret was picking mild sauce for the chicken, I was kicking myself for that. Would have been great with their homemade hot sauce. Generous dry rub on the outside and the skin looked very nice and intact
But they seriously need to fix their fries. It's degrading the overall quality of their food because the frozen fries are, well, frozen... I'm gonna recommend that actually
I've been back a few more times now and have never been let down. The medium BBQ sauce on the sandwiches or BBQ chicken is my choice, just the right amount of heat and flavour. The jerk is pretty hot for those who enjoy the heat.
As for the sides, I think the mac&cheese is my go-to, but I'll get the cornbread occasionally. The beans were a little too bold for my tastes. I still need to try the creole rice though.
I also noticed that they had poutine offered for one of the student lunches. I might give that a go, although I heard the fries aren't anything to speak of.
I went for takeout lunch a couple of weeks ago, and got the pulled pork sandwich lunch deal and a beef brisket platter. Beans were very dark, almost black, and couldn't finish them (tasted a bit burnt). Meats were decent though not smoky. BBQ hot sauce was quite hot, and was mixed into the pork meat (they ask first). Coleslaw decent. Terrific service, really friendly and informative.
I just went there last night finally... Great service/ very friend staff/owners. And I loved my Pulled Pork sandwich. It was HUGE.
I actually really enjoyed the baked beans. A nice kick to them. I also got the hot sauce on my sandwich but didn't find it hot at all vs. what Food Tourist mentioned above.
I wish I was in the area more often but I think I will probably make a special trip out there to try some of the other items on the menu.
Went there tonight for the first time. I ordered wings with two sides cornbread and sweet potato fries. Wings were excellent very meaty and nicely sauced smoke flavor was not as intense as I would have liked but they were still excellent none the less. I lucked out as they just had a fresh pan of cornbread coming out of the oven--it was very moist I would order it again. The sweet potato fries (from frozen) were adequate--would be nice if they did fresh cut fries. The owner/staff person Jean is from Montreal originally and some of the recipes he mentioned are his grandmothers. I will definitely go back even though the location is a bit out of the way for me.
Thanks for the head's up Duckdown. I can't believe I missed this post back in Feb or I would have definitely tried this place by now. It is on my agenda for this week, and I am looking forward to supporting another southern BBQ place.
Hi...heading to Brampton on Wednesday...does anybody know if they have an online menu as I would like to pre-order something and pickup. Also do they sell the meat by the 1/2 pound or pound? If anyone knows I would appreciate.
I will always will go the extra mile for a Duckdown junk food reccomendation. I checked out Rd's today. What a treat. Had a quarter rack of ribs with mac n' cheese as the side. I had a the "hot" sauce with the ribs. The sauce was tangy and sweet, not hot. The ribs were succulent. Smokey and very tender. The mac n'cheese came out in a perfect square shaped piece. It was luke warm and bland. Creamy more than cheesy. It tasted like noodles with cream cheese. Under seasoned too. Not worth the fat or calories. The fries looked good albeit frozen. I would return and stick to the meat. Thanks Duckdown. Good rec.
I have gone twice and was excellent twice.
First time had ribs and creole rice,my brother had the jerk chicken burger.
Ribs were great,creole rice also.The chicken just melted in your mouth.
Secind time I had the pulled pork with beans and corn bread.
Sandwich was excellent,pork was very soft and tasty,beans were ok and the corn bread was excellent.
Definitely will be going back.
With my new job, I now drive past RD's every day, so it's on my radar. Another site (Urbanspoon, I believe) has mentioned that the staff has changed but not for the better, and prices have gone up.
With the most recent post in this thread being in Dec 2011, has anybody been recently that may be able tocomment on whether it is still any good, or has the quality diminished at all?
My most recent experience was in Feb, I believe. There was a gentleman (owner) and his son working. I was the only one there (however it was about 3pm).
I think this was the original owner so I am not sure if it has changed hands since. Had a good (not great) pulled pork sandwich, large portion.
