olive oil tasting in MSP

stymie Feb 25, 2011 10:36 AM

I would like to find a local source for very good olive oil. Any places in the MSP metro area that offers tasting opportunities? Grazie

Googling "olive oil store MN" brought back four possibilities right off the bat.

I love Annona Gourmet...the woman who runs it is very knowledable and patient. We've tried Vinaigrette, but felt we didn't get the same level of knowledge/service.

Surdyk's cheese shop often has olive oil samples out. Also Ecopolitan restaurant at 24th and Lyndale sells Bariani olive oil which is quite good. They use it in the restaurant so they might let you have a taste.

I like the olive Grove Olive Oil - close to me in Mendota Heights. Covers multiple regions, several infused flavors, and they have balsamic vinegar as well.

I don't know if it's any good, but there's also the Stillwater Olive Oil Company. http://www.stillwateroliveoil.com/

Stillwater Olive Oil is a fun place to browse and if I recall, all the varieties have tasters. I love the butter flavored olive oil.

I like Stillwater Olive Oil Company: I've been to a couple of the other shops and Stillwater has the most variety...definitely worth the drive! Staff is very helpful as well.

Thanks for the help. Made it to Annona Gourmet and got my first olive oil lesson. Jeanie, proprietor, was in the store and generously shared her knowledge of the products she carries. Taste samples of several of the oils and vinegars were quite an eye opener for me. If you cook, even if it's just dressing a salad, you owe it to yourself to get over to Annona Gourmet or one of the other Olive Oil vendors in the area. My larder will hold some of these wonderful products from this day forward.
