Dim Sum - Lai Wah Heen & Crown Princess

I think I have narrowed down my choice to either Lai Wah Heen or Crown Princess.

What is the average cost for dim sum for 2 at each place?

I am a first timer, any advice or suggestions?

Lai Wah Heen

  1. Hard to be too precise..depends on what you order! If I was planning to go to Crown Princess I would budget $20-$25 per person. Going to LWH, I would expect to pay at least 50% more than at CP. There is an online menu for LWH... If I was planning for dim sum today, I would forgo both places and head to Dynasty on Yorkville....based on my most recent experience. Dynasty is in same price range as CP if not slightly more. An entirely satisfactory experience can be had at Rol San on Spadina for $15-20 pp...but the dining room is not as fancy as the other 3.

    1. We spent around 30$ per person on my last trip (2 people and we overindulged) as I think we had at least 2 extra dishes. Lai Wah Heen could cost you almost twice as much depending on what you order but at least 50% is a safe bet.
As for the other person's recommendation to go to dynasty mmm I would advise against it as on my last trip there the food was bad and service were average at best. This applies to dinner and perhaps they have kept their standards for dim sum.
You can also throw Pearl in the mix if you like but I prefer Crown Princess over it.

      1. Dim Sum at Crown Princess for 5 greedy people last weekend was $102 - without tip.

        1. I like Dynasty on bloor actually, last couple of times I went it was pretty good for dim sum and its not expensive. For me, Lai Wah Heen was a bit pricey and the food wasnt that great.

Just to clarify, Dynasty has relocated from Bloor Street to Yorkville Avenue effective December 2010

T Long, offhand, do you know what time Dynasty stops serving dim sum? I looked at the website, which mentions they're open from 11-11, but doesn't mention when the dim sum ends.

Also, have you ordered dinner at Dynasty? If so, are there any dishes you'd recommend? I looked at their dinner menu last night, and almost stopped for a quick dinner, but was a little overwhelmed by all the choices.

Hi prima: I've only been the one time to Dynasty's new location for dim sum. Our reservation on a Friday was at 12:30 pm. I recommend reservations at lunchtime, so they will be able to tell you about any cut-off time for dim sum. My last experience for supper would have been over 2 years ago at their Bloor Street location, so unfortunately I don't have any relevant comments. Regarding the dim sum, we had gone to Crown Princess a week earlier. In terms of food quality and service, we found Dynasty noticeably better this round. CP was much better, especially the service, when they still had the early bird promotion.

Thanks, T Long. I'll have to give Dynasty a try soon, not sure if it will be for dim sum or dinner.

Hmm didn't like the dinner there as I think it was way better before (I attended a wedding there along with two set course dinner for xmas/new year) as mentioned earlier the last dinner was very inconsistent. I have enjoyed dim sum there before in the old location I hope they kept it at the same level as otherwise CP has them beat.
