Good chow in Chinatown?

Morning fellow chowhounds! Wife and I are heading into SF next month. Staying at Club Quarters...like to keep a lot of dining options close. Will be dining at Cafe Claude, Belden Place, Perbacco, drinking our coffee at Trieste and caffe Roma. all easy walks. Question is....my wife loves to walk in Chinatown and we are looking for suggestions for dinner there. In the area we have had good meals at Tommy Toys, the Great Eastern and. of course the R and G lounge. Any suggestions?

  1. Z and Y has very good Sichuan, if you can handle spicy. Bund Shanghai is pretty good as well.

    2. Right around there, Bocadillos (Spanish / Basque), Wexler's (slightly upscale barbecue), and Comstock Saloon (Cal-eclectic) are good.

Sai's (Vietnamese) and Orale Orale (Mexican, open for breakfast) are decent sit-down restaurants and inexpensive by the inflated standards of the FiDi neighborhood, where takeout-only places get away with charging $9 for a salad or sandwich.

Barbacco's another good one. Same chef as Perbacco, surprisingly reasonable prices on the food, almost like it's a loss-leader for the drinks.

For Vietnamese, Golden Flower at 667 Jackson is a couple blocks from Sai's and much better in my opinion. In particular, herbs and raw greens at Golden Flower tend to be fresh and perky while I've had a lot of limp bean sprouts and wilted lettuce at Sai's. Golden Flower, Bund, and Z&Y are within steps of each other, and you can check them all out before choosing.

Consider the Reveille coffee truck on Pacific or Macellato on Columbus for morning coffee & pastries to go. Between you & Chinatown are sister restaurants Cotogna and Quince. And Coi (prix-fixe restaurant and a bar with humbler menu) is a few blocks away on Broadway.

Golden Flower's open later, too. I only recommended Sai's because it's a block and a half from where salmotrutta79 is staying.

        3. Jai Yun, if you catch them on a night that they're open. But they're aren't a lot of recommendable places in Chinatown given the higher quality of Chinese food in the suburbs.
