Samosa House in Culver City

flowergirl Feb 24, 2011 06:53 AM

I was pleasantly suprised by a delicious meal at Samosa House in Culver City. The restaurant is actually a portion of an Indian market. You order at the counter and find your own table. The most popular item is a combination plate. You choose three items from a display of vegetables and main dishes. It comes with brown or white rice, fresh naan and yogurt sauce. The dinner , with a drink was under $10. I don't remember eating a meal I enjoyed for anywhere nnear this amount. Since I am not familiar with many of the dishes, I appreciated that I could taste the items before ordering. Everything is vegetarian but you really don't miss the meat. I am looking forward to returning.

The place is a bargain. And they let you taste their offers too.

Went Sunday for the first time to the Washington and Overland location (just across from Sony Studios). Really good food. Combination plate was delicious. Still under $10. Loved their vegatarian chicken and garlic naan. You will definitly not leave this great little spot hungry.

If you like Samosa House, you'll love Bawarchi on venice an motor.

It's a much better version of the same restaurant. Same layout, same combination plate, even many of the same dishes. Both are vegetarian places that serve more-than-palatable "fake meats." Both do the three item with rice and naan combo. Bawarchi's is $9, which I think is comparable to SH

Bawarchi loses some points because their naan isn't amazing, but their dishes blow Samosa House's out of the water and this is coming from a guy who does like Samosa House very much.

If you only want Samosas though, stick to the SH. But there's no comparison when it comes to which is better overall.

irrc, the chef at Bawarchi was the original chef at samosa house.
when he left to open Bawarchi, samosa house continued to make some of his recipes.

You recall correctly, Westsidegal. I love both places (as well as the owners of both locations.) It's always a drag for me to have to choose one over the other.

Agree that Samosa House food is quite good. It is a delightfully-run little market/restaurant, a minor gem on the Westside

There is some overlap but the two places are not equally good because of it.

Of course it's a matter of tastes, but if you like SH and haven't tried Bawarchi, you need to give it a try.
