Brunch recommendation - for a group?

Hi there,

I've been tasked with finding a brunch location for my mother-in-law's 60th birthday party. There will be 20 people, and wheelchair accessibility would be a bonus to best accommodate 90-year-old grandfather (he can manage a step or two, but not much more than that and we're probably renting a wheelchair for him for the day). Any suggestions in the downtown area?

I was looking at Le Select, but for a group this size we have to go with the private dining room option which is beyond our budget.

Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed!

Vivienne.

If you've already chosen Le Select it is fab -- I'm going there later today LOL!
I was going to suggest Mildred Temple Kitchen .. a bit out of the way, in Liberty Village at King and Dufferin, but the food is great, they have a nice and spacious dining room (+ wheelchair friendly), and there is free parking :)

Maybe The Drake on Queen West or Bar Italia on College Miranda

Oooh the Drake brunch is good. And I've had only good experiences with the service -- great, even, especially on weekdays.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions, folks. Ultimately, a few guests have dropped out of our little shindig, which means that we are no longer required to go with the private dinig room option and Le Select is affordable again. I am kicking myself for not thinking of the Drake on my own -- definitely going to do that, or Frank, next time (maybe for my own birthday!)

FYI, for under 20 people, Le Select will put on a lovely $39 set menu with choice of french toast, eggs benedict, steak and eggs, grilled salmon, or scrambled eggs. Includes juice/coffee/tea, fruit salad, crossants, and dessert -- quite lovely.

I was wondering about the set-up fee for Le Select but I now see you're referring to a set menu. If they were, or are, purporting to charge for a dedicated server, though, I think that's kind of a scam - automatic 18-20% gratuity is normal, an additional fee is not. Anyway, if you've got it all worked out there now and you're happy, that's all that counts. I was also going to suggest Globe or Earth as back-up options. Have a great party!

If budget is a concern, what's your budget?

I'd like to keep it under a grand, if possible.

So, $50pp, all in, I assume. I'm going to exclude drinks, since that's not so much a brunch thing, and I don't know if your group drinks. This is probably fairly generous for brunch.

Frank is wheelchair accessible, I'm pretty sure. And you can book off one of the areas off to the side, which would be nice. Now, I haven't been there in a while, but the times I went a year ago were decent-to-good. There have been reports of less-than-good experiences as well. They do take reservations.

There is O&B Grill that is large enough to accommodate and also takes reservations. I haven't eaten at this particular location. They might be able to do a prix fixe if you're willing.

Will ponder other options, but this'll get things rolling.

Frank's is probably a good call. Wheel-chair friendly, and a clientelle that would be suitable. I'm surprised Le Select wanted so much for brunch. $50pp for brunch is pretty generous.

When you guys are talking about "Frank's", are you referring to Frank at the AGO or Frank's Kitchen on College?

I went to Frank last Sunday and it ranged, as jlunar said, from decent to good. Our party of four spent less than $50pp after tax and before tip (no alcohol, just coffee and bottled water). The food was decent to delicious, albeit not mind-blowing or particularly amazing. The service was nice, but got a bit more tense when it got busier.

Argh, hit "send" prematurely. I'm ok with spending around $50 per person, but once I include the set-up fee and charge for a dedicated server, Le Select has quoted me over $1300. That's starting to cut into the gift budget, if you know what I mean.
