Northern NJ is a pretty big area, but I love the hummus (and falafel!) at Beyond Pita in Montclair.

I definitely recommend Nouri's near St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson......just off Route 80 (Madison Ave toward Clifton exit). Saturdays can be a little busy, but parking is available and the folks in their family business are very helpful.....not overpriced either. I am not crazy about Fattel's Bakery although some folks rave about it.

There are hundreds of Middle Eastern places in Paterson, including some excellent groceries where you can buy terrific hummus and pita and anything else you might be interested in.

Here's a blog post that describes a couple of the groceries, and also has links to other posts about some of the local restaurants: http://offthebroiler.wordpress.com/2009/08/23/nj-dining-nouri-market-and-fattals-bakery/ .

This is a great little place too: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/21/nyr...

+1 for Bennies. i highly recommend Samdan in Cresskill as well.

and i hear Hamsa in Tenafly has good hummus but i can't vouch for it firsthand.
