They are so lucky Oprah didn't have the burger
Many people have heard the terrific story of when Oprah was staying in Hyannis attending Ethen Kennedy's funeral and she fell in love with the chicken pot pie from Centerville Pie Company. One mention of it on her show, and like a bad romance novel, the pies becaume an instant sensation. Sure, it's a nice feel good story on how two middle aged women shot to stardom, got hooked up with Harry and David, and their business took off. Like so many others, I read the article in the local paper and I hurried down to get a pie to go. It was okay. Came with a too thick gravy on the side. But the crust was really good. At $20 per pie, however, I just couldn't justify the price.
So today I decided to stop in for a burger and slice of pie at their lunch counter. Disaster. Strike one, order water with lemon. After almost 10 minutes the harried waitress brings me a plastic cup with lukewarm tap water and a small slice of lemon, no ice. Five minutes later she returns for my order and I ask for ice. I get 3 cubes topped off in my plastic glass, so I'm guessing they must cherish their ice and hate to part with it. The burger is a 6 oz. hand formed fresh patty for $5.25. So far so good, until it is cooked under a flat iron until every last drop of juice is squeezed out of it and it shrinks down to about half the size of the bun. Strike 2. I ask fror it "with fries", a $1.50 add-on on the menu. Problem is, I get my check and am charged $2.50. The ever harried and disorganized waitress says, "well, you ordered a side of fries which is $2.50"., but a burger WITH fries is just a $1.50 more. Huh? Strike 3 so I skip the pie as the case looks dirty anyway, and pay. Actually, the whole place was rather greasy and dirty even though the blackboard exclaimed in bold letters "We got an A on our health inspection!" Makes me wonder why that was a big deal, but I now have my doubts. Oh, they had their signiture pie on lunch special for only $5.95, it came loaded in that too thick gravy and served with a side of frozen mixed veggies. Photos below:
